Well if you rewatched that 80 TD run, it was all on Welter. Welter bit on the half back handoff hard, started flowing towards it and really never saw the qb come running right down hill where he should of been if he hadn't bit on the fake so hard.

It does not bode well for next because that's one of Auburns bread and butter type plays. He doesn't need to flow one direction where we have four guys that could make a tackle, while he leaves the hole he should be covering wide open.

It doesn't matter who stars... they'll share PT.

You people really need to get over this welter hate.

I'll have to watch the replay but it won't help much if we don't know the call scheme. In a lot of systems, if a two tech DT doesn't get playside on zone then the MLB has to fill playside A. The TD run was to backside A. Now, the DT may have gotten there and Welter just blew the read. I'll have to rewatch.

All that said, our DTs were definitely not getting playside against State last week. Auburn's inside zone is going to key the playside DT and option off of him. It could be a long night unless something drastically changes.

80 of those came on one play where it was Welter who was out of place

Welter will get eaten alive by Auburn's offense.

79 of which came on the TD run that went right up the gut where the Mike LB patrols.

And guess who the MLB was on that play? Welter was so out of position and wasn't close to doing anything.

chief managed to give up almost 600 yards vs state, and miles started a qb last night that went -21.5 for a passer rating. So I don't know what they see.

Welter completely bites on the play fake to the RB and gets caught up in a huge pile of people he runs into instead of staying home and watching what the QB does.

Which is exactly the same thing that happened on the Prescott run last week.

Welter, sadly, reminds me of some earlier versions of EA Sports NCAA football, where the programmers cheated on true blocking animations by having the linebackers sucked into a pile.

If you're talking about the long TD Run Welter didnt even leave anyone (including himself) in the middle of the field. He lined us up completely incorrectly.

172 yards rushing last night and a LONG QB run right up the middle for a TD.

The SEC is going to have a field day on our defense. Bottom line is we are simply too weak in the trenches.

How do you know this? It depends on the call. One of the DTs might have had the counter gap. He might have completely abandoned HIS responsibility to chase the play. Welter might have chased the RB secure in the knowledge that his teammate had the other gap. None of us can tell that by looking at the "film".

This defense has been plagued by miscommunications and blown assignments. Generally, those are probably the fault of the young players like Beckwith and Godchaux. But, hell, I don't know. The thing I DO know is that you don't know either - not unless the coaches or players tell us.

I think it's obvious. But I don't make the decision. I want beckwith to start

It's the exact same thing during the State game and Wisconsin. Our coaches do review our game film, right??? It blows my mind.

It wouldn't matter if Mett started at QB if Welter sees significant playing time at Auburn. Beckwith is much more critical.

This is a silly topic. It's like arguing whether it's wise to play with an injured ankle or an injured shoulder. If we've got a problem on this team, whether it's in the middle of the offense or the defense, we're going to have trouble beating quality opponents.

An UNBLOCKED Welter repeatedly takes himself out of the play for big gains up the middle. If he had been there and whiffed enough to slow the runner down, it would probably not have been a touchdown. It appears that he is committing too early, before the play develops. Is it because he's trying to compensate for his lack of speed?

It's not his fault. He's doing the best that he can, and unless something changes, he's a high quality backup. It's up to the coaches to produce the correct depth chart.

rotate DL a lot (more Gilmore) and start Beckwith. I also want to see if Feist's spring game performance was just as telling as everybody else's seems to have been.

I wasn't joking. I thought that since it's well known that Welter's only real strength is his knowledge of assignments, more than likely it was someone else's fault.

Lo and behold, in this morning's Dandy Don report, we see this gem:

Tashawn Bower, who took the blame for New Mexico State’s lone touchdown, played extremely well besides the technique miscue.

So, yeah, I was right!
