Since the OP eliminated Shaq from the equation it has to be Pistol Pete Maravich.

Maravich had more talent in his little finger than Shaq has in his big, overweight body. People now might not recognize him but he was world famous in the 60's and 70's. He will still be in record book with the all time college scoring record when Shaq is old and gray and no one will know him.

Dr. James Andrews deserves strong consideration (top 5) based on his professional career and being recognized as the best sports orthopedic surgeon. From an athletic standpoint, he was an SEC champion pole vaulter and partied like a rock star albeit 50+ yrs ago

If you limit it to their time at LSU, then it is clearly Pistol Pete. Some argument could be make for Billy Cannon.

As a guy who grew up in the northeast and knew next to nothing about LSU until I moved south and started working with LSU grads, the answer is Pete Maravich.
In Boston, as a kid, we would call ourselves Pistol Pete if we made a hard shot. And that was after he was out of the game.
LSU has had a ton of great athletes, in various sports, but Pete is in an exclusive group that includes the most famous people to ever play their sports.
