Didn't he do play by play for WBB for a time? Seem to remember tuning my battery powered 90's radio and finding his hilarious voice calling a game.

Why do y'all care if Kent Lowe retires or not?
Generally he is a background guy that fans have no interaction with or even know what he does, nor does his performance have some huge impact on the program in a positive or negative way. He's the media relations guy. He gets press conferences set up, handles media requests for coaches and players, disseminates info. for press releases, and keeps track of historical info. of the program. That's really all he does. Why do you need some youthful person in there to do that?
As for last night, he was a last minute fill in. It's not like that is his regular job function to do. I'm sure he knows he isn't great at it.

He was in NOLA for a funeral and didn't get out in time to catch the team flight. He got on a later flight to Missouri that connected in Dallas. That flight got canceled and he had to miss the game.
