When was the last CFB player who was truly like TM7?

I went down a honey badger rabbit hole recently, and was re-amazed at how much of a gamebreaker this guy was. It's almost like he still should have won the Heisman despite the suspensions.

I honestly can't remember another player that was so clearly mixing things up in a spectacular, game-changing fashion...every gottdamn game!

It's easy just to say "Joe Burrow", but I think you will know what I mean by my question.

Also, I could have sworn that "Randall" actually did make a voiceover for a TM7 video at some point, but I just cannot find it. All Youtube seems to have is a fan taking the original Randall audio and putting it over some highlights.

I may be a little biased, but I’d say Joe Burrow. It’s hard to compare their position to one another, but he’s truly the only other player I’ve seen dominate effortlessly since then. They’re just on another level.

But Joe Burrow was mostly just in complete mastery of the rudiments of his position. He had spectacular plays now and then, but I think mostly his dominance came in the form of his being an industrial grinder, just relentlessly making the correct decisions.

Matthieu, however, was routinely making all-time highlight reel plays. Most players would have been remembered if they had done just ONE of them themselves.

Also, maybe it would make the question easier if QBs were just removed from consideration, as they have much more opportunity on a play-by-play basis to make a direct difference?

Charles Woodson would be the closest. Honey Badger made many, many more plays as a tackler, and Woodson was more of a ball hawk with INTs. But both impacted the game as a roving defender that was hard to account for.

Minkah Fitzpatrick at Bama was similar. Obviously not quite as good, but similar

I'd say Eric Berry but he didn't have the star gazing punt returns. Offensively I'd say it was Percy Harvin.

A player on defense similar in changing a game and being that dude, would either be
Stingley/ Simmons/ Young
Last year.

Probably Charles Woodson as far as being just flat out dynamic.

Deion Sanders was the most dominant cover cornerback ever but he hated tackling and all of his turnovers were from interceptions.

There are only 3 CFB players in the last 30 years that seemed to have a knack for making the impossible look possible

Barry Sanders
TM7
Burrow

Their play can only be described as magical.

No way man, TM7 was completely different kind of player and playmaker.

Hard to know over different eras but Charles Woodson could do things others just couldn’t.

Really? You must have missed it when Joe got chased out of the pocket and made long, spectacular throws just as he was going out of bounds. And knowing when and where to run to keep a key drive going is not trivial. Bouncing up after a bone-crunching hit and making a big play several times is not trivial.

I can't think of anyone more dominant at his position in the SEC than Joe. TM7, Julio, Bo Jackson, Emmit Smith, and a few big DL's and LB's here and there get honorable mention.

Derrick Thomas. 27 sacks in one season. That's akin to Barry rushing for just over 2600 yards. Total dominance by both.
