When people say "LSU is always ranked high to start the year."...

I hear it all the time, I'm sure most of you have too, and it drives me crazy because it's just not true... And I know preseason polls don't mean anything, but it is still annoying.
Here is the Preseason Rank, Season Record, and Final Rank of LSU for the last 10 years.
Next time you hear someone say it, simply show them this
LSU 2015 Preseason Rank: #14 (went *9-3, finished #16)
LSU 2014 Preseason Rank: #13 (went 8-5, finished #27)
LSU 2013 Preseason Rank: #12 (went 10-2, finished #14)
LSU 2012 Preseason Rank: #5 (went 10-3, finished #12)
LSU 2011 Preseason Rank: #4 (went 13-1, finished #2)
LSU 2010 Preseason Rank: #21 (went 11-2, finished #8)
LSU 2009 Preseason Rank: #11 (went 9-4, finished #17)
LSU 2008 Preseason Rank: #7 (went 8-5, finished #29)
LSU 2007 Preseason Rank: #2 (went 12-2, finished #1)
LSU 2006 Preseason Rank: #8 (went 11-2, finished #3)
- 5 of the last 7 years LSU has been ranked outside of the top 8 to start the season.
- 3 of the last 5 times LSU has been been ranked inside of the top 8 to start the season, they have finished in the top 3.
Should be a fun year

Which poll are we talking about here?
They finished #14 in 2012 not #12 and started #3 not #5

Not sure those numbers are very strong ammunition for us. Looks like 6 of the last 10 years, including the last 4 in a row, we've finished lower than we started in preseason.
Also, this seems a little odd...
Didn't we start #1 in the Coaches poll and the AP poll that year before the AP re-voted after the suspension of Honey Badger and dropped us to #3 IIRC?

Yea, that 5 is definitely off.

Huh? We finished unranked in the AP and Coaches' polls in 2014. We finished #23 in the Harris Poll, but that was before the bowl game loss. They didn't do another Harris Poll after the bowls.

They finished 23rd in the college playoff rankings. ESPN changed their formatting that year.

That was before the bowls, though. After the bowls, we were out of the top 25 in both post-bowl major polls.

The point of the thread was to disprove the common misconception that "LSU is always ranked high"...
People act like LSU starts every season in the top 5, when in reality over the past 7 seasons they've averaged starting at about #12.
But yeah, let's focus on me having a few rankings wrong by one or two spots

If Cholly 2.0 can finally do what he's never done - be truly elite - I'll stop thinking he's a fraud, but something tells me he'll once again do just enough to keep the job, and not an ounce more.
If it's close, I'm sure the media will come riding to his rescue again.
Hey, what's our retro-recruiting ranking now, after yet another transfer?

There's a lot of things about miles you can notch about, but transfers aren't one of them.
You realize we had to have multiple transfers to get down to 85? Its not like any starters transferred out.

quote:No, just former 5 star and other blue chip recruits, including 4 WR's. The pumpers think these guys left because they just weren't good enough to beat out our roster of super players. A simple look at the roster tells a different tale. After Dural and Dupree are gone, we have overrated players followed by jack shite.

But if they all fall flat at their new schools, I'll stand corrected.

That's how this game works. Happens every year to some extent. How else would you get to 85 spots? Just hope and pray some kid gets homesick?

I hate we lost TJ, but from all acounts, he was 4-5 on the depth chart AT BEST. We Will be fine at WR for years to come.

Name me a couple players who left lsu and had big careers? It just doesn't happen. If they were a big part of the plan going forward, they would still be here.
You're just looking for something to bitch about.

I see a lot of initially ranked higher than where we end up.

You keep giggling, but it's pretty simple math. You sign 25 players a year, but can only have 85 total. People have to go. And we didn't lose many from last year to graduation and juniors leaving early.
Awaiting your results of those transfer success stories.

BTW, I could give a shite if any player has a great career in the NFL. I don't give a fraction of a frick about the NFL, and many players who were great in college and led their teams to success didn't have great pro careers, if they had pro careers at all.
I'll bet you $1000 that Johnson doesn't peter out and ride the pines at OSU, though.
And I haven't even gotten started on the convicts. That's another pattern of the Miles era.
Again, what's our retro-recruit ranking, especially now that we've lost a former 5 star? People always mention LSU's year after year recruit rankings, but it never accounts for the players who either leave or are rendered ineligible because of off the field issues.
