It seems that the game itself now often plays second fiddle to tailgating. People care more about getting drunk than they do about cheering for the team. I think that's one reason why so many fans leave early, other than beating the traffic of course.

I agree with this!
THIS! Tailgating on the level we have now is a relatively new phenomenon that began in the '90's when the team was so bad folks needed an excuse to go to the games.

It was nowhere near the current level it is now, but that era definitely began the phenomenon of people "just coming to tailgate." Curley's teams were really hard to watch.

It's not that they don't get it. It's the hype of all the people "trying" to keep time but "trying" to keep up with the rest of the crowd. I promise you, the last thing I'm worried about is keeping time with the band. I enjoy clapping with the crowd.

You almost HAD to be drunk to watch them!

That's the story I've always heard. I do remember being at TS in the early '70's absolutely FREEZING my butt off, though.

After a few bars, the clapping is a good second or so out of synch, and it sounds terrible. It's really, really easy to keep pace with the band, considering the simplicity of and familiarity with the beat.
but "trying" to keep up with the rest of the crowd.

In all seriousness, there are 2 things. First, I think "Hey, Fightin' Tigers" is tacky. It's a bad tune from a really bad Broadway show that ran for about 15 minutes. We have enough "fight" songs already.
Second, The Golden Girls. Now wait. I think the idea of the Golden Girls is wonderful. But somebody needs to tell whatever old crone is in charge of them that the 1950's called and want its hairstyles (including the artificial extensions) and swimsuit styles back. They can still do their great routines, and wear sexy outfits, and generally demonstrate the outstanding pulchritude of LSU women. Just bring them into the 21st century.

This is one whiny bitchy thread. Some of you don't have much else to do. Lsu has one of the best game atmospheres in the nation and you idiots still nitpick it to death.

I'm not a huge fan, but it is better than the stupid ESPN notes they play. ESPN hates LSU.

Here is the thing, the 30 year olds blaming the students for STTDB are the same people who were the students that got tiger rag banned. And the people in the 40s blaming the students who got tiger rag banned, are the students who were such arse clowns in the late 80's early 90's, that they made the greek system go to hell. And so on.... So anyone who was once an lsu student, will get blamed by the older generation for something
Agree!

Perhaps, the lesson here is that "banning" band songs is not necessarily the way to keep students from saying nasty words.

Couche couche
A very old-time, traditional breakfast, couche couche is the Cajun version of fried cornmeal mush.
1/4 cup oil
2 cups yellow cornmeal
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup water
Heat the oil in a heavy pot or preferable a cast iron dutch oven.
Mix the dry ingredients, then add the milk and water. Pour the batter into the hot oil, and allow a crust to form on the bottom before stirring. Reduce heat to low and stir occasionally; cook for about 15 minutes.
Serve in bowls with milk and sugar, like a hot cereal.
Serves 4.

As a drummer, I can tell you what happens. A natural reaction for a musician is to speed up the tempo when he/she gets excited. Problem is, you don't have 92,000 musicians sitting in the stadium, and they have no concept of tempo period. But they do get excited, and thus the tempo speeds up way past the beat anyway.
I like pregame before the clapping thing started. Hearing the bass drum only addded to the moment.

The droves of fans who leave early and then vehemently defend their right to leave early while simultaneously insisting that they are "die hard" LSU fans.

My point is no one really cares and the sound of the mixed clapping shouldn't affect the band. Therefore, this will never stop.
