First i want to start by saying i have faith in the kid, he has the arm, the speed, and the ability to do whatever he wants, he showed us last year that he is capable of making quick last second decision like the toss to LF7 while getting tackled in the Syracuse game. I really like Harris with the zone option, this worked well up until his injury in the bama game and i think it is a huge advantage with people crashing to fournette and guice on run plays. Hopefully this year cam and clm will let him throw on 1st and 2nd down instead of 3rd down when everyone knows it is coming. If he can get in a rhythm with more pass play calls and our receivers seeing the ball more then just blocking for run plays i think he will make a huge jump. The O just needs to get in manageable 3rd down situations and harris needs to hit his check downs when need be and throw accurate short passes. All in all i think he will have a big jump this year and take us to a natty with possibly 1 loss.

What I really hope is that they will let him play to his strengths, regardless of down, and not micro-manage the plays all the time.

60% completion percentage.....we don't need to gun-sling it obviously but we need to be able to move the chains fairly consistently on 3 and 4 or more.

It amazed me at times how cringe worthy his short passes were. I do expect he has improved in that part of his game though.

Not knocking Harris, but my wife would have made that decision.

This is a myth that we didn't throw on running downs. We sure did. And we weren't very successful.

Obviously it's important to hit these short passes, but I think the threat of the deep ball is more important. That will keep the safeties out of the box.

Dinking and dunking will get us a couple yards on pass plays, but if that's our entire passing game it gives safeties all the reason to cheat down if they know they'll need to be there regardless of whether it's a run play or a pass to the flats. Accuracy in all parts of a passing offense are important, but I think the vertical passing game is key.

1st down: we threw on first down quite frequently last year. we ended up second and 10 most of the time when we did.

2nd down: i'll be the first to say I don't know much about play calling on 2nd down, esp 2nd and long. the vast majority of the time a running play is called in that scenario. I think it's because the coaches are trying to prevent 3rd and ten and give the O more choices on 3rd down; ie, 3rd and 6 gives you a lot more plays that could give you a first than 3rd and ten. a good run, a short pass, even a bubble screen.

so I don't agree that our O troubles was not throwing on first down, it was NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL throwing on first down.

I know the majority on here think our problem is our scheme but the problem I saw was mostly execution; that's when the QB has to throw a good pass and the WR has to catch it. the A&M game last year should have cost Brandon Harris his job; that was the single worst passing performance I can remember seeing. his passes were so inaccurate their defense couldn't even get to them. I don't care what else happens we can't win the SEC west with those kinds of performances. it's sad that we don't have a second string guy that can come in and win a game when our QB goes catonic.

We threw on running downs some but way more times than not it was run, run, and then pass in obvious passing situations. Your average football fan knows this and all the talking heads on tv do as well. There wasn't too much creativity in our offensive game planning.

LSU GrandDad, I gotta disagree. First, we did not throw quite a bit on 1st and 2nd down. Secondly, many of the throws we attempted were tough throws. No player or coach is perfect. But I'm with the majority, when I say, a good scheme can make any QB look good. A bad scheme has the opposite affect.

If Brandon Harris can complete 55% of his passes on third down I will be more than happy. Maintaining possession and extending drives will result in increased scoring by LSU, and fewer opportunities to score for opponents. With the talent and experience LSU has, that should be enough for LSU to have good chances of winning every game.
