Seriously, I know Chavis gives up a lot of 3rd or 4th and long but where does it come from?

Yeah, I remember when we got him and Tennessee fans were saying good luck with that part. They felt that he was good, but grew tired of the 3rd down breakdowns.

UThug fan creation. Apparently his defenses there struggled to get off the field at times.

When ND made the first down on fourth and 9 on their first drive I knew it would be a long day.

At Tennessee and LSU, he plays soft zone coverage in third and long situations and gives up a lot of first downs. It was maddening to UT and has been maddening to us.

Ask Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame. If they can't tell you I will give you a 1/2dozen more.

Prevent defenses with 4+ minutes left letting the other team gain 10 yards at a time, just to prevent the touchdown.

but obviously it doesn't work with that much time left. Never understood that.

Chavis' defensive MO is a form of bend-don't-break.

The other team starts at their own 20, make them get 6 or more first downs to score a TD.

This is why he was so successful against teams like aTm and Oregon, because they rely on big plays. Chavis believes that you will make a mistake along the way to a TD, forcing a punt. It's low risk, medium reward for the most part.

However, the downside is you put yourself in a position for close games, and that form of defense is the exact style you want to face in a 2 minute drill.

It wasn't just that. He was criticized (as was Fulmer) for not being able to adapt to the spread...primarily Urban Meyer and how bad UF was just destroying them.

Ironically enough, he really seemed to excel against the spread while at LSU and thats what actually led him to his current position
