Granted I'm not from NO, but I stayed at a place on Eagle & Apple streets, had a blast.

Stay in the Central Business District; you will pay less for a hotel (than you will in the Quarter) and be short walk from the Dome and Quarter.

Saw them ripping carpet out of that place this afternoon. They also had three swamped cars on the neutral ground out in front of it. There was one BMW that had gotten stuck trying to get up the curb and not only had a completely jacked up underside, but also flooded.

Used to live in Broadmoor, sold my house like five weeks ago. I loved living in a house that had a huge lot, pool, pool house and a great yard. Katrina changed it all. I now live in the "Golden Square." Where my money buys half the house for double the price. FML.

Jefferson Avenue to Audubon Park in one direction. St Charles to Magazine in the other direction.

Is it dumb to stay on the west bank? I can't afford 250 a night on a college budget.

Dumb, no. Sketchy in some parts definately. Try the Hampton Inn on St Charles Avenue uptown or the Best Western right next door do the Hampton. Both are reasonable and on the street car line so you don't have to drive to the Quarter.
