Stayed a night near LAX before a flight to Kauai. Ubered to Venice canals and walked the beach from Muscle Beach to Santa Monica pier. Stopped for lunch/drinks at Hotel Erwin Venice and sat on the rooftop. Had beers closer to the pier. Nice day, very laid back....

Do it. I moved my young family from BR to the Houston burbs years ago, great for all and my career. Don't live too far from work, that commute gets old quickly....

A few places outside of the city that I've personally enjoyed:
-Barton Creek Resort
-Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs
-Lost Pines near Bastrop
San Marcos is a good area. Look in the hill country west of Austin as well.
