These kids need an opportunity to show what they can do. Alexander and Chesnut have been really below average. It’s time to get these kids a few series. We’ve made changes everywhere else.

Besides Sam, who has played well in the secondary? Maybe it’s coaching?

They can't. House/BK don't adjust scheme. The scheme is complex. They clearly can't grasp it. Hard for younger players to. Harris even struggles at times with it and he should be playing man where his talent lies.

LSU's talented young players like Womack can't find the field because of this scheme. It should be drastically scaled back or altered but that's what happens when you have square peg in round hole coaches. They recruited DBs in the portal to play zone because they're not talented enough for man yet they got Harris who's the clear most talented potential big time player but he's playing what he's not meant to be. It makes no sense. The players last year caught on quickly from portal. The guys they got this year are not grasping it quickly.

Yes, LSU needs an Aranda here who molded his scheme every year based on his players and had no problem changing it throughout the season. House is not it. They will not change the scheme until they're forced to with a loss and that's a problem. Nobody in media is going to ask this hard questions but it's clear as day. It's why Perkins continues to struggle and play out of position. None of the players are comfortable in this scheme. Anyone can see it except House and BK.

He did get Perkins on the field last year and Weeks this year. I’m not ready to give up on House but I’m done with Steeples.

Steeples is still growing. It’d be foolish to give up on him. It’s his 2nd year at this level. He, like the entire staff, walked into a shitshow of a roster.

LSU is not in a position to grow a position coach. You want to do that? Stick to an admin position, graduate, or go coach at a small college. You get paid the money he is in his position you better recruit very well and show results. Steeples is nowhere near what we thought he'd be. This is the highest paid staff in SEC you expect results not to "grow" a coach.

At the very least I thought we'd get him as an elite recruiter but he's not that. Nobody on the defense is and this is where the bad meat of the recruiting is currently on the staff. House is lazy, doesn't recruit, Steeples and Cooks are decent recruiters but not great, we have no DL coach currently, and Steeples/Cooks are not good coaches. What are we paying for again?

These guys weren’t coached by steeples for long. They all are portal guys with multiple years being coached by other coaches so their deficiencies aren’t really on steeples. Remember JBC and Garner last year were way better than this. There’s only so much you can do in a single offseason

They get more than enough opportunities in practice every week to show what they can do. Apparently it’s not enough yet.

Well said and this scheme is not working.
House better make some changes and adjustments and play Womack, Jefferson and Swinson.

House is not it.

Although House had his moments last year when LSU looked way better than I expected them to, the fact that he tried to mess with Perkins and didn't recognize after months of practice that he needed to scrap that idea before the season began tells me he is not one to quickly adjust what he has in mind.

I feel like with this offense, we just need an average to slightly above average D to compete for the SEC championship with how everyone else looks. I'd simplify as much as I could so young guys like Weeks, Harris, etc., could excel even more and just rely more on their natural instincts and athletic ability. Those more complicated schemes are more for veteran defenses (if for anyone at all).

This coaching staff was put into an impossible situation at DB when they took over. These were the players on the roster :

They've done what they could in the portal and their own current crop of DB's they recruited on their own are just freshmen.

Defensive back is a 3yr position. Unless you are a complete stud, you really cannot expect much until that 3rd year.

Safety

Todd Harris
Jay Ward
Derrick Davis
Matthew Langlois
Sage Ryan
Jordan Allen
Major Burns

CB

Damarius McGhee
Raydarious Jones
Laterrance Welch (FR)
Jaeyln Davis-Robinson (FR signing day)

That list of safeties has multiple multi year starters and multiple 5* recruits, it’s not a bad group of talent to inherit. Now yeah, corner is a different story.

Jay Ward is the only guy on that list that is any good. And he played out of position most of last season

Harris and Welch should be starters
Stamps on deck
Chestnut should never see field again
Alexander should be last resort
