From his demeanor this past Saturday night before, during and after the South Carolina game, I honestly think he has checked out. Before I get crushed, I don't really blame him, but he has checked out.

As a senior, the 6-1, 179-pound Shepard rushed for 1,946 yards and 28 touchdowns and threw for 1,843 yards and 20 touchdowns. Shepard also led Cy-Ridge to a 17-5A district championship in 2007. Alongside Matt Barkley, Shepard was considered the top quarterback of the high school class of 2009 by both Rivals.com and Scout.com before converting to wide receiver upon arriving at LSU.
Although Shepard was heavily recruited by Texas and received interests from Florida, Michigan, and USC, he announced his decision to accept a scholarship from Louisiana State University on March 3, 2008. He committed to LSU since he believed he would get the best chance at playing quarterback there. Texas told Shepard that if he didn't win the starting job at quarterback, then he could play other positions. USC likewise found him to be a Reggie Bush-type player in their offense.

He graduated in December 2008 to start his college career a semester early. Shepard stated that he intended to learn the team's football system during LSU's spring practices that year.
He played in the 2009 Under Armour All-America Game on January 4, 2009. As of March 2009, he was ranked as the #3 Athlete on ESPN150 for the high school class of 2009.

Mettenberger attended Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia. As a senior he threw 2,106 yards passing with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. He was ranked as the 11th best pro-style quarterback recruit in his class by Rivals.com.

What is the size of Texas? What is the size of Georgia? RS was rated #1 QB in the nation by both Rivals & Scouts coming out of high school and the #3 Athlete. Not only did RS throw for 1800+ yards, he rushed for 1900+ yards. So don't say the guy can't play football; just call it for what it is... The coaching staff has not utilized him to his maximum ability!!! A complete and utter waste of God given talent for whatever reason.

For those of you who were so pissed when Miles played JJ in front of Lee. Same concept, who the hell knows why he does some of things he does. Because he is the head coach, because he can... Most likely so! But don't say RS isn't a good ball player because crazy les doesn't play him!!!! Assinign and Bu11shit!!!

If you make plays when given the chance you get playing time. Stand around, whine, and don't play good you ride the pine pony.

Shep could be very dangerous out the backfield if the staff would use him correctly.

I've been waiting on Shep to meet expectations for almost four years now. He seems like a good kid and has loads of talent, but nothing has meshed with the guy.... I hope he has a few big games to help us win, but no one should hold their breath...

I love Shep. He's going to be a success at something because he is a smart, hard-working, loyal, dynamic personality.

That doesn't mean it'll be in football, though.

Shep would be good at KRs, but *not* punt returns. Your #1 job as a punt returner is to secure the ball. Shep's hands just aren't on par with OBJ or TM7 or Mo Claiborne's or any other recent LSU punt returner. More like Trindon Holliday's. And Les figured that out and took Trindon off of PR duties after too many muffs.

Shep is an asset on kick/punt coverages. He is also an asset in the passing game, but his hands are inconsistent. That's just the truth. I'm sure nobody works harder to improve on it, but with hands there is only so much technique you can apply to improve.

I like Shep on the jet sweeps and the fake sweeps. That one critical 3rd and 3 last weekend where Mett saw the pressure and adjusted the play (imo) to fake the sweep to Shep and handoff inside to Ware was a thing of beauty. Yes, it netted 4 yards, but I liked it.

To summarize, I think this is a case where Les and staff are already utilizing Shep's strengths in the best way.

And, like I said, Shep will likely wind up a big success at something... he's just that strong of an individual.

I think you missed the past 3.5 years somehow. The coaching staff has tried NUMEROUS ways to utilize RS. Few have really had any success.

He is not a punt returner.

He is not a kick returner.

He is not a tough runner, so "wildcat" is not really an option.

He fit "best" as a receiver...but never really excelled in that roll. Now LSU simply has other guys Magee, Boone, Landry and OBJ that are apparently ahead of him for PT.

So he plays special teams and does a good job there.

He was not wasted...he did not pan out.

Would he have panned out elsewhere? Who knows...impossible to say.

Despite all of this he has some great long runs and receptions for touchdowns.

He has had some long plays and receptions, but very few if any have been anything special. Most of his long runs he just ran around end or through the line without having to make anyone miss, just ran fast on a straight line. We have a lot of guys who would have made the same play he made on the same call. Just sayin.
