ESPN has been advertising their SEC Storied show on Warren Morris called the Walkoff. The ad says that Morris was a walk on. Is this correct?

It is possible. Morris was a very smart guy and could have been on an academic scholarship. There were plenty of ways Skip used to get around the scholarship limit to load the team up.

ETA: LINK His LSU bio says he was on an academic scholarship.

No they just made it up instead of researching information

Preferred walk ons in baseball, that's why you had 40/50 man rosters and most kids either payed their own way or were smart enough to get academic schollies, that was pre TOPS days if I remember right.

The better part of the story is that he was set to have a huge season, but broke his hand early in the season when he was hit by a pitch. If my memory is correct, I don't think he had an AB until the regional, and even then he was pinch hitting here and there.

The TOPS program started in 1989 and I seem to recall that Warren Morris was deemed to be a walkon and was on a TOPS scholarship. I also was told that Todd Walker was also a walk-on and on TOPS scholarship. Of course, I could be wrong, but the stories back then were that most La boys playing baseball were on TOPS scholarships and LSU didn't have to waste baseball scholarships on them (i.e., they were deemed to be walk-ons).

TOPS didn't start until sometime after 1996.

quote:

In 1989, the original Louisiana Taylor Plan became law as a result of Mr. Patrick F. Taylor’s educational initiatives. Governor Roemer signed ACT 789 into law creating the first state-funded, merit-based college tuition program in the country called the Louisiana College Tuition Plan (LCTP). Students were required to earn 17.5 units in the core curriculum, score a minimum 18 composite score on the ACT, and earn a 2.5 grade point average. In 1992, the program was renamed the Tuition Assistance Plan (TAP) by ACT 887 and ACT 718. Both programs had an income cap. In 1997, Governor Foster signed into law ACT 1375 and ACT 287 changing TAP to the Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS). The income cap was removed, the program was broadened and the core curriculum was adjusted to 16.5 units. With this law, all Louisiana students became eligible for awards based on their academic performance. In 2001, Governor Foster signed ACT 1202 which provides the Governor, Legislature and public with an annual evaluation of the TOPS Program. In addition, the data collected provides indicators on how effective individual high schools are preparing their graduates for college or entry into workforce training. In 2008, Governor Jindal signed ACT 652 renaming TOPS the Louisiana Taylor Opportunity Program for Students in honor of Mr. Taylor. Louisiana’s Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) is a comprehensive program of state scholarships and one of the most innovative and progressive student assistance programs in the nation.

This. I graduated in 98 and it just had started. It was super easy and you only needed like a 17 or 18 and a 2.0 average or something stupid to get a free ride.

TOPS was not available for me or my brother and sister and that goes to mid 90's for sure. My parents were pissed, they put us all through school and then TOPS comes along.

Hardly anyone in this thread could have qualified for TOPS apparently.

I thought I was the first class to get it. So many dumb asses went to college and dropped out after a semester or 2. since it was so easy to get TOPS.

Close. Right numbers, wrong year. TOPS started in 1998. I was in the first eligible class to receive TOPS.
