As far as the front six, the difference is only slight:
• If the Jack remains off the line, he functions as the Will and the front is a 3-3. I'm not too familiar with how teams assign duties in the 3-3.
• If the Jack slides down to the line of scrimmage, he becomes what was previously our WDE and the front becomes a 4-2. However, we might expect to see him in a standing position with his outside foot back and his inside foot near the line, rather than in a 3-pt stance.
• The same plays and coverages can be run from either alignment, which is the point. This might mean that we only rush 3 linemen even though we line up in a 4-2.
• The SDE can also back out and play coverage, sending the Jack to rush instead. But this is nothing new, even for a typical 4-2-5 Nickel. We've heard talk over the past month from Neal Lewis saying that he will sometimes play like a linebacker. Heck, we've even seen our DTs in previous years back out of there and disrupt a pass using a spy technique.

And yes, we ran a lot of Nickel last year and should expect more of the same this year. Every team we play will require us to enter into the Nickel at some point and some teams will force us to play Nickel or Dime for the majority of the game. Even Alabama has been running a lot of 3-wide under Kiffin.

We should be running a fair amount of 3-4 against the Wisconsin offense, which still uses a fullback, and then Jacksonville State will require us to perfect our run blitz in order to shut down their read option. I would hate for Aranda's 2nd game as our DC to be marred with an Auburn-esque debacle.
