Understated here about Jayden Daniels targeting 1st drive. We score if it's called.

We'd score there easily if they call the targeting. It was so blatantly obvious on the replay but it cost us 7.

- Missed targeting call on Daniels
- Missed PI call on Nabers
- Hilton’s 2 TD drops

All of these could have made a difference in the game. Of course if the defense wouldn’t have given up 55 points, this board is talking about a National Title right now.

im glad in not the only that thought that was targeting. None of my friends agreed with me I thought I was taking crazy pills. Luckily, it turns out I wasn't, only oxy

Are you talking about the 2nd drive? They score on the first drive if Hilton catches that dime from JD5.

It wasn't targeting. No lowering of the helmet. No launching. Barely any helmet to helmet contact. Just a solid hit when Jaydenleft himself exposed.

For the record the "late hit" wasn't late either.

Maybe. To assume a touchdown…..easily? It didn’t look like targeting as much as Daniels taking a hit straight up with no lean to soften the blow and the defender hitting ball. It was awkward, but I didn’t see targeting. He takes too many of those kinds of hits.

What about if they call back the TD where Thomas never had control until out of bounds?

How many 3rd and longs did we give up?

We didn't lose because of the refs

That hit wasn’t targeting. No one talks about it if it were a WR or RB, but because it was a QB people are trying to dissect the hit down to the smallest detail. JD needs to learn to slide and stop being an idiot. He doesn’t have the frame to take big hits like that and survive every week.

Ok, but it wasn’t targeting.

Did not lead with crown of the helmet & Jayden Daniels was not a defenseless player. That’s the rule.

Targeting = contact to head/neck area of a defenseless player

The rule was changed to leading with the crown of the helmet or lunging at the head or neck area. Being defenseless isn’t really what they look for now.

Wasn't targeting, he was considered a running back at that point, not a defenseless player and the defender did not use the crown of his helmet. You need one of those two.

2019 NCAA® FOOTBALL
RULES AND
INTERPRETATIONS

quote:

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact
With the Crown of the Helmet

ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an
opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least
one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.
(Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head
or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player

ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head
or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet,
forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least
one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul
(Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-4-I-VI)

Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes
of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a
legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not
limited to:

• Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward
and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or
neck area

• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with
forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet
are still on the ground

• Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack
with forcible contact at the head or neck area

• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with
the crown of the helmet

Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14). When in question, a player is defenseless.

Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:

• A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.

• A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a
backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time
to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.

• A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or
the return.

• A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has
completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself
or has not clearly become a ball carrier..

• A player on the ground.

• A player obviously out of the play.

• A player who receives a blind-side block.

• A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward
progress has been stopped.

• A quarterback any time after a change of possession

• A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet first.

It’s both. Targeting is really two different fouls:
1. Forcible contact to head or neck area against a defenseless player
2. Leading with the crown of the helmet (against any player)

They really should have given the two fouls different names, IMO, because I can see how it causes a lot of confusion for fans who haven’t actually read the rule.

ETA: That said, I did not think it was targeting. Looked clean to me. Daniels was not a defenseless player and the defender didn’t lead with the crown of his helmet.

If Daniels had been in the pocket, I do believe that same hit would have been called targeting (because he would have been a defenseless player) but he wasn’t.

Did you watch the 2018 Feasta bowl?

There was nothing defenseless about Daniels on that play.

Good no call.

It wasn’t targeting.

Quit bitching about how that one play would have changed the outcome of the game.

The one where JD fumbles....wasn't it straight face mask to face mask? If so, is straight face mask to face mask targeting?

This. Yes live in full speed it looked like potential targeting. But it wasn’t.

That’s my 1 and only complaint about JD this year. He lets too many defenders hit him…hard.

Seems like at least once a game he takes a huge hit that could have been avoided with a slide or going OOB
