ESPN interviewed Saban yesterday and mentioned that its tough for a team to beat a team twice in a season. Saban responded "is there and statistic to that or is that something you guys make up?"

This got me wondering about rematches and what the outcomes were. The only potential rematches could be in a conference championship or a bowl game. The only ones that come to mind in recent history are the following. In bold is when a team won both games

ACC
2007 Virginia Tech vs Boston College.....Vtech lost at home in the season but won in conf championship.
2008 V-Tech vs BC again....Vtech lost in the regular season at BC but won conf championship
2009 Georgia Tech vs Clemson.....G-tech won both games
2011 Clemson vs V-Tech.......Clemson won both

Big 12
1999 Nebraska vs Texas.....Nebraska lost in the regular season but won in conf champ
2000 Oklahoma vs Kstate.....Ou won both
2001 Texas vs Colorado....Texas won at home but lost in Conf championship
2002 Ou vs Colorado....Ou won both
2005 Texas vs Colorado...Texas won both
2007 OU vs Missou...OU won both

SEC
1999 Bama vs Florida....Bama won both
2000 Florida vs Auburn....Florida won both

2001 LSU vs Tenn.....Tenn won at home but lost in conf champ
2003 LSU vs Georgia...LSU won both
2004 Auburn vs Tenn....Auburn won both
2010 Auburn vs S. Carolina...Auburn won both

Championship Game rematches
1996 Florida vs FSU....Florida lost on the road but won in the championship game.

I know I could be missing some bowl games.

So of the games listed above, the advantage goes to the team who won the first game. So what the hell is ESPN talking about????

I have never understood that logic. The results of the first game have nothing to do with the second.

ESPN propaganda is just that, propaganda. They'll do anything for ratings and pumping up the Gumps gets them a lot of that.

I think the logic that its hard to beat an evenly matched (key term) team 3 times (like in the NFL) might be sound, but 2 times isn't all that crazy to do.

I haven't seen the stats on 3 times with the NFL though, and obviously, that can't happen in college.

Bowl game rematches
1959 LSU vs Ole Miss... LSU won @ home then lost in the Sugar Bowl
1987 Michigan St. vs Southern Cal...MSU won @ home then in the Rose Bowl
1997 LSU vs Notre Dame... ND won @ B.R. then lost in the Independence Bowl

Interesting that he would say this. I know he likes to be a dick to the media, but quite honestly once they got in the game (so this doesn't count the campaigning before the SEC CG) he seems to have become more of a realist than anything... and just punking the media on a daily basis.

Saban actually said on ESPN before the rematch was set that " it's very difficult to beat a team twice"

He must have done some research since then.

I played sports. Ive beaten teams twice quite a bit. I never really bought into that logic. Even against stronger competition Ive beaten teams twice in the same year. Its not that uncommon.

Each game is different. The last game means very little, you can make adjustments or use it as motivation, but frankly do you really need motivation in the Natl Ship??

You have to come with the same intensity, passion, preparation and fight to each game regardless of opponent. I dont know that the odds really change all that much to be honest. If anything the team that won the last game probably has better odds. But it doesnt matter.

Each game will played on the field and the last game will be forgotten fairly quickly I hate the "tough to beat a team twice" logic.

I have never seen Saban lobby so hard. Even after the fact, he is lobbying. Why? He's in the game!

Obviously they weren't talking about the Miami Dolphins from 05-08. It was pretty easy to beat that team twice.

A very important point to remember and be able to flawlessly recite in Gumpland.

Please though, do NOT forget that they are also 'the better team.'
