This oft cited stat on this board seems to bear out jack shite when you actually look at it.

The problem with the yards per play stat is that it only MIGHT be informative. There are myriad ways it can be uninformative.

Consider the following.

Team A in the first 4 drives.
Three 12 play 80 yard drives and One 6 play 40 yard drive.
Yards per play? 5.71

Team B in the first 4 drives.
One drive of 2 plays for 90 yards.
Three drives of 3 plays for 9 yards per drive and punt.
Yards per play. 9.0

I would point out that this offense would also be AWFUL for the defense.

So, when people talk yards per play.........well..........meh.

Yards per play - 6.67 (i.e. among the best in CFB)

Yards per play - 9.00 (i.e. outrageously higher than any team in CFB)

This hypothetical is uninformative because one is an actual offensive approach, and one is a 10-year old playing Madden. Over the course of a season it is literally impossible for 18% of your plays to account for 90% of your yards.

Illustrative purposes. The point is that there are variables to any stat that must be considered.
