I stood up for the first 10 minutes of the game and was yelled at to sit down by some old fart.

Why in God's name do some LSU fans feel compelled to instruct others to "sit down" at a frickin' football game? I understand that there are some older fans who are physically impaired. I respect their needs. If I find myself in front of such a fan, I will gladly sit down. But that is a miniscule fraction of the fanbase. Most people have the ability to stand.

I really believe that the decline in the intensity of LSU's fans base is primarily attributable to one factor: indolence.

Are the fans so lazy and obese that they can't even...STAND UP when appropriate? Are they so sluggardly that they can't...REMAIN IN THEIR SEATS for sixty minutes? Are they so lethargic and torpid that they don't even have the energy to...MAKE NOISE?

No one is asking these fans to complete an Iron Man or plumb the mathematical mysteries of string theory. All they have to do is come to the game, cheer continuously for LSU, and stay in their seats for three hours. That's it. That's all.

And yes, yes, I realize that it's your money and your ticket and you'll damn well do whatever you please.

Or you could just admit that it was for money/donation purposes. Because the size of the student section is going to shrink because TAF loves their money.

Of course.

If someone brings their kids to a game, I will certainly not lecture them about leaving early on a rainy day.

There are a couple of inaccuracies in this post. The Student Section does not stop with the band and the empty section above the band is for students although they will sell tickets if the game is big. The Greek section emptied out and that looked terrible. The folks on the east and west who leave early are making LSU look bad and that is all about the money. We sit in north and love it because we like to stand and cheer and we are close enough to the students to matter. We have tried to move but we want to eat and pay our mortgage so TAF can't have it all.

Wow. Talk about the tail wagging the dog.

It's a COLLEGE. Students enroll there to LEARN. Football is an EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY. Without the college (i.e., a place of higher learning for students) there would be no athletic program, and no football team. Which of these simple facts do you not get?

Dont be plain ridiculous. I suppose when LSU won its championship in '58, it was because of extra alumni money? I know college football has become big business these days, and I am also aware of the state of the economy. That being said, I have to agree with the sophomore kid, here. College football is unique in that it doesnt sell out like the No Fun League. NCAA football is for the disenfranchised, the commoners, and those who cannot afford to live their dreams. Most fans look forward to the season because it is a break in their blue collar, back breaking, brow sweating, hard working lives. It is a dream for most to attend LSU, and the students go there to obtain an education, which in turn, leads to a better paying job overall. So it does make sense, to be good to the fans while they are here, so they that may be more apt to contributing funds to TAF, and returning funding for later games by both visiting and purchasing season tickets. But do not underestimate the student section. It is the lifeblood of the football program, and yes it has been proven to be fickle at times.... I would venture to say though, it is the older crowd who leaves earlier most of the time, and puts less energy into the stadium. I graduated from LSU two years ago, and have grown much more conservative. Realize that what really separates LSU from other stadiums in the country is the energy and passion of Tiger Stadium, and at the heart of that energy and passion is the Student Section and LSU band. Everyone deserves their time in the sun, expand the student section...

"LSU should be expanding the student section... not the other way around. "

last year the student section had 3,000 no shows a game

With the structure set the way it is, that actually makes sense. Part of the give and take with dealing with young people is while they are highly passionate and energetic, they can be fickle and sporatic. The best way to harness this power consistantly is to open up the SS for all students, that way the freshmen who lost out on the lottery, and other students who missed a deadline or could not afford tickets or whatnot could fill these ghost seats you speak of

Lets just face the facts its all about the money LSU does not give a rat shite about you unless you put up the cash. When you stop putting up your status goes back to being a nobody

You make a good argument about student seats.

Why do students get midcourt seats in the NCAA Final Fours? Television. They are rabid fans and not sedate like others that attend.
I think more students in the stadium would be better for recruiting.
I saw my first game in TS in 1962. I am still a fan and make many home and some of the away games. Call it state pride.

I graduated in '03 and didn't miss a home game in the four years I was a student. It saddens me that all the students don't have the opportunity to go to all the games anymore. It saddens me more that the stadium was so empty on TV on Saturday. (I know it was raining, but man, it looked really thin.)

I would certainly cough up the arm and a leg that TAF charges for the chance to watch football in Tiger Stadium again, but I live 900+ miles away now. Last year, I went to the Florida game, sat in Gator territory and cheered the entire time they laid 50 on us. I did that because LSU is MY school, and win or lose, I'm damn proud to be a Tiger.

I go to Dolphins games on occasion. It's nothing compared to LSU, and that's what scares me. This athletic arms race has heated up to the point in which students don't get the opportunity to watch their classmates play. That connection to the guys on the field and to the place they represent, that's the magical part of college sports. It would be a real shame to diminish that magic for the sake of more well-paid-for, empty seats.

You do realize that even if a section of seats were to be taken away from the student section, that TAF would not get control of those seats, right?

It's been that way for at least 25 years.

You think the student section had a capacity of 27,000+ in the 80s?

Yeah, I clearly said in the quote you pulled that they don't have an opportunity to go to the games. If a student doesn't care about football or doesn't want to buy tickets, then fine. The fact that freshmen don't even get the opportunity to attend the full season anymore is what I find sad.

I know plenty of people who got shut out as freshmen and this is going back to 1985-86-87.

Welcome to the rest of Tiger Stadium!
Correct I was in Sec 420 row 7. All I heard the whole first half (they left right at half time) was him complaining how he couldn't see. If you want to sit down and watch the game stay your arse at home. Death Valley is starting to turn into the LSU Opera House.
