The Tigers turned a 36-24 deficit into an overtime victory against Texas Tech on Tuesday night in the PMAC. The Tigers "Big 4" each recorded double digit scoring and Martin and Mickey each had career high rebounding totals. Mickey led the way for LSU with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Martin was right on his heels with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and some monstrous dunks.

Josh Gray scored 14 points and added 4 assists, while Keith Hornsby scored 12 points, including LSU's only two three pointers.

Tim Quarterman added 6 big points off the bench and played nearly the entire second half on Zach Smith after he scored 10 first half points. With just seconds remaining, Tim Quarterman got a steal and layup to tie the game for LSU and force overtime.

Overall, LSU shot only 2 of 19 (10.5%) from three point range and 24 of 52 (46.2%) from two point range. While the Tigers struggled shooting, they were able to force 17 turnovers, and outrebound the Red Raiders 47-46. They also played much better defense than they did against Gardner-Webb.

The Tigers forced the Red Raiders to shoot only 38.3% from inside and 25.0% from the three point line. They were able to cover the pick and roll much better and ball handlers were more worried about protecting the ball from obsessive defenders than passing the ball.

This wasn't a game in which LSU played their best, but they were able to find a way to win. LSU was able to turn a 12 point deficit into a victory, and while this win will not be circled by the selection committee, LSU dodged a huge red mark on their resume.

Better to win ugly than lose pretty. I'll take the W no matter how we get it.

This is a win that will grow this team up. I wish we could blow out every team we play, but facing some adversity early will benefit us come conference time.

Unimpressive win, but still a win. Lots of work to do for the tigers. Good to see them hang in there and mount a comeback. Gray needs to shoot about 5,000 free throws before the next game. Martin's windmill was nasty!

no way T. They'll probably finish 7th or so in the Big 12 (9). Tech is a bad team. They couldnt even beat Texas A&M-Commerce.

LSU tried to lose this game at the free throw line...

LSU started the season

Game 1: 13/14
Game 2: 11/13

88%....

Before ending the game

4/10

40%....

I'm very happy the Tigers won but I keep reminding myself that we had to go to overtime to win a home game against a team that started 3 freshmen and is picked to finish dead last in the Big 12.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much yet....

yeah this is an NIT team right now. Maybe they'll progress and gel but anyone claiming they're a tourney team is just being hopeful at this point.

Some random thoughts:

LSU is averaging 79 possessions per game while NCAA average is 68.5 possessions per game.

Jarell Martin is averaging 39 minutes per game...

Jarell Martin has back to back double doubles after posting only 1 such game all last season.

LSU's average possession length is only 14.8 seconds. Last year they averaged 17.0 seconds per possession.

LSU is shooting 76% from the free throw line, nearly 10% better than last year.

Definitely not. It would have been a very bad loss. Nothing I could have done to spin that.

Hornsby hitting those two threes changed the game. Thank goodness the gray missed dunk and missed FTs didnt haunt us. I thought he played well and he is going to get better seeing the floor when they run.

There was no way I could tell with all of those easy baskets they were getting.

That is definitely the problem playing guys so many minutes...

At the end of regulation we were 9/11 free throw shooting. in OT we were 6/12. Our starters were playing 43, 41, 41, and 38 minutes a piece.

I think JOB not being on this team is actually helping the growth of Martin. Kind of weird, but JOB put a bit too much of the workload on himself and it cost this team last year.

It's nice that a defense can't just center on one person like in the past. We have 4 guys who will average over 15 a game... Gonna be wild.
