Team played their arse off in the second half to win this game.
TT might not be very good, but they played a pretty good game last night. Especially the 2nd part of the 1st half when they got hot.

Considering how poorly we shot the 3, to get the win is a good win. We have to shoot the ball better that's for sure. But, I think both Hornsby and Gray are better shooters than they showed so maybe it was just one of those games.

My biggest concern right now is quality depth. I don't see alot. We can't have our starts playing that many minutes as the season goes along.

Martin did spark the team with that awesome dunk, but he still has to be one of the most frustrating players with so much potential to watch. If he would have caught a couple of passes last night he could have brought the house down on with a couple more finishes. It looks like he lost some weight which should help him on the def. end. Sometimes it feels like his mind runs quicker than his body which leads to some turnovers and lazyiness on D. When he gets his jumper going w/his ability to drive the ball he will be scary good and hard to stop.

Losing Hickey I thought would have made an impact but if Gray plays the way he did the first two games, we will be fine. He looks very composed with the ball in his hands and until overtime he was money at the free throw line. Can't wait to see Robinson in a few years down low. Really glad Jones made an adjustment at half by not playing Epps, Robinson or Bridgewater and making everyone take the ball to the basket. I'm looking for to see how we press with Martin, Mickey, Epps, Q and Gray on the floor. Geaux Tigers, team should just get better and better.

Reminds me of the 2006 final four team...

Had players averaging 36.7 min, 34.4 min, 33.5 min, 31.8 min, and 25.9 min...

They JUST missed some good looks early. If those go down then I think we see a much better first half. The problem was that they KEPT settling for the jumpshot and 3's after it was clear no one was having a great shooting night.

Credit Jones to start the 2nd half. LSU was much more aggressive going inside, and even Jones himself up'ed his energy level on the sideline. Unfortunately LSU went back to the jumpshot even after putting themselves in the Bonus with 13:00 to go. LSU should have lived at the FT line in the second half. They didn't.

Overall the defense was better. Though Mickey and Martin would still rather stand under the goal and try to block shots rather than come out a bit and meet the driving offensive player.

His stats won't show it, but IMO Quarterman was the player of the game. Big plays on defense, rebounding and assists when LSU desperately needed it. He brought energy to the team.

There won't be too many games where LSU shoots that bad from outside. However, there's no reason this group should be taking a lot of 3's in any game. The sooner they come to that realization, the sooner they won't shoot themselves OUT of games going forward.

Surprise of the year this far: Patterson gives them some really good minutes off the bench

The biggest issue for Gray right now is turnovers. He is probably a more explosive scorer than Hickey, but Hickey took much better care of the ball.

In Jones post game interview he said he has a group of very confident shooters, but at times they were far too confident and settled for shots.

He said it's okay for them to shoot the basketball, but LSU has to play inside out.

I'm hoping that Hornsby just had an off night of shooting, b/c outside of those 2 huge threes...he looked off.

Also, Martin can throw down some insane dunks. Dare I say his dunks look more athletic than T. Thomas.

Quaterman is a liability on offense and can't hit a 3. When he comes in the game, we should be playing up tempo. He also gambles a lot on defense, which is why he should only be in the game when we are pressing are playing an extended aggressive defense.

Josh Gray needs to learn how to not take on 6'9" guys at the rim on a fast break when we are up with less than 2 minutes to go. Pull the damn ball out, he had two turnovers pretty much doing that, b/c he missed his free throws he kept short arming. We did this last game. Did they not learn how to play at the end of a game with a lead?

Texas Tech ran good inbounds plays all game. Ole mustache Tubby is known as a pretty good coach.
We ran the same stupid inbounds play where no one sets a pick or even hustles to a spot to beat their opponent there.

Many times last night, it looked as if we were playing high school ball or rec ball, where they just did what they wanted to and played on athleticism. It did work at times last night, but that's not how you beat a good team.
We lack discipline, and general basketball knowledge. We called a timeout late in the game when we really needed a bucket and quarterman shot a 3 with 15 seconds left on the shot clock. Tech saw him shoot and probably had a sigh of relief.
We took way too many shots from 3 feet in front of the 3 point line. Gray and Hornsby don't need to be shooting long twos like that, shoot the three or get to at least the free throw line if you want to shoot a jumper. A shot from just inside the 3 point line, even when wide open, is the dumbest shot in basketball imo.
Mickey needs to shoot the twos, not the threes.
Martin needs to touch the ball more.

We have the potential in these players to be a really good team. I feel we lack the proper coaching to get close to that potential. it's early in the season, i'm excited to see what Johnny Jones can do with this team and hope we see some improvement over the year and less boneheaded decisions.

by the end of the year this win will be looked upon as a good non-conference win

Texas Tech is picked to finish last in the Big 12, BEHIND the Trent Johnson led powerhouse TCU. We are lucky. A loss last night would have been this year's version of Rhode Island from a year ago.

I went to bed after the first half b/c it was too painful to watch. This team is like our teams in years past....they just can't shoot. Unless we play GREAT D we will lose many games. And I didn't see a great effort defensively from most of our players in the first half. Mickey was getting beat regularly b/c of lack of effort. Maybe he did better in the second half.

Regardless, if we can shoot we can't win. It's as simple as that.

Definitely not. It would have been a very bad loss. Nothing I could have done to spin that.

Ok. It sounded like in your preview you were trying to say that though they will be near the bottom of the big 12 that they arent that bad since its a stacked conference.

I was simply meaning that Texas Tech would be mid table in the SEC... But losing OOC to Tech would really hurt us. We aren't gonna get a lot of respect with SEC wins.

I think bridgewater also showed he has no business being on the court unless it's next season or we're up by 30

Also, if we would have stuck to our scheme in the 1st half instead of all of a sudden deciding to shoot at will, I honestly think we blow them out.

Some thoughts from last night...

1. A win is a win. A home loss to the (projected) worst team in the B12 would have been catastrophic for our tourney resume, so take the ugly win and don't look back.

2. Having said that, there is a lot to be concerned about in the half court offense. Nobody on this team can knock down open jump shots, and that's pretty alarming. Outside of Mickey on some pick and pop mid range stuff, and Martin crashing the rim, there's not a whole lot in the half-court on which we can hang our hat.

3. Gray looked very quick and displayed plenty of aggression and willingness to drive to the rim, and getting to the line is always great, but a couple of those drives could have set up an easy basket for the bigs with an extra pass. The missed FT's down the stretch were annoying, and all too familiar to the inconsistency Hickey displayed late in games during his LSU career. Hoping it doesn't become a trend.

4. Hornsby has an ugly shot, aesthetically speaking, but he shot 38% from deep during his one season at UNC-Ash, so clearly it works for him. Glad he got a couple to finally fall when he did, as that provided a much needed boost, but we can't endure too many more nights of 4-11 shooting from him.

5. The defensive effort in the overtime was excellent. If only we could play on-ball defense like that on every trip down the court and avoid the prolonged lapses. Locking down on D and getting easy baskets on run outs is the only way we're going to survive. Especially if we can't shoot.

6. Quartermann provided a ton of energy and some good transition opportunities but another guy who is going to have to actually knock down some shots to give us a chance.

7. Martin and Mickey are awesome, but we all knew that. Gonna be fun to watch them stack up double-doubles all season. Too often last year it seemed one or the other would take a back seat, deferring to the other or JOB to be "the guy" that night. Last night we got complete games from both on each end, and their sheer athleticism and length overwhelmed Tech at times.

8. Need Robinson to be more active on the boards. 1 rebound? C'mon bruh.

9. Need more ball movement from EVERYONE. Offense was way too stagnant. Too many one pass + shot possessions. 14 assists to 13 turnovers is not going to cut it vs. squads of actual quality.

10. Overall, we're two games in with a lot of new pieces, so there's no real reason to panic, but we'll need to show a lot of improvement across the board to realize our potential. Some definite concerns have presented themselves, chief among them jump shooting and defensive effort, that could prevent us from becoming the NCAAT team we all want and expect.

the problem i have is they were down because of poor shot selection.

we were going to lose that game until quaterman intercepted that pass at the end of the game.
