This is a better TEAM than last years. Yeah, we had better talent last year. But, this team plays with more chemistry. They actually seem to be a little better coached also. They still make the typical JJ mistakes that we have seen since he has been here. So far, we have won the games we "should" win and lost the games that were a toss up. The big test is going to be Thursday night against Wake Forest. I think we will really see what this team is made of.

My Thoughts:

Mays will be a great player at LSU, but lately he has had some pretty awful turnovers. He also lacks on the ball defense. He hustles on the defensive side of the ball, he just doesn't stay in a defensive stance and play good on ball defense.

Branden Jenkins. If this guy is as good as they were talking him up in the off season, then we need him back ASAP. I have seen several people say that he could move into the starting PG position. If not a starter, he would add a ton of depth to our team. I was hoping to see Jenkins get some minutes last night. Hopefully we will see him sooner rather than later.

We are still a few fouls away from getting killed down low. Once Reath or Victor go out of the game, we have no one to stop a decent player down low. This worries me when it comes SEC play. So far, we have not played anyone with good size in the post. Anyone know Epps status? I know he went out with an ankle injury early in the 2nd half. I hope Elbert transfers, he is awful. I do like Simms, but he can not guard a bigger player in the post. We all know what Bridewater brings to the team.

Shot selection. Per usual under JJ we take HORRIBLE shots at times. Between Brandon Sampson and Antonio Blankeny, they both force a ton of shots. They are our best options outside of Reath down low. But, we need to do a better job with shot selection.

A huge positive in the close games this year is we actually hit our free throws at the end of the game. Correct me if i'm wrong but in the last minute of a game that was close, i don't think we have missed a free throw.

Overall the team has performed a lot better than i personally expected. I thought by now we would be hearing rumblings of JJ being fired. But, it has been the complete opposite. The season is still young and we can easily crash and burn or get into the tourney talk. I'll be very interested to watch the Wake Forest game on Thursday.

What are some things you guys took away from the game?

My main concern is shot selection and post defense

which are two pretty critical aspects

Solid post. LSU bkb fans dwindle every year, we need some sort of positive momentum.

It's going to be a crazy, up and down season. This team is very young. Reath has been a shocker. I was just hoping for him to eat minutes, but he has played really well. I predicted we would be better than last year and maybe make the tournament. I still think we will be close.

The Jones firing talk is really dumb. The guy is alumni and has never had a losing record here. This team is frustrating at times, but still fun to watch. I'm looking forward to see how they do in conference..

I agree. Reath and Victor don't do a horrible job playing defense in the post. But, when you get past them (which is a lot due to foul trouble) it gets ugly very quickly.

I almost wish we would look at running some zone. I know we would not rebound well out of a zone but it may keep us out of foul trouble a little better and make it a bit easier to guard the post. We would have to play it aggressively though, we couldn't play some un-organized slow 2-3 zone. It would have to be very quick with good rotation to make it work.

IMHO you see flashes and glimpses of good play, just enough to let you know we are capable, but kinda cruise and lose focus just as much or more. And to me that's what we've always been under CJJ.

I wish that were different but to me it's been a pretty consistent thing IMHO.

This team has talent. Rieth is and SEC big man, and Victor is solid and even better with his compliment in there.

Blakeney, still inconsistent, but very talented, could have played anywhere in the country he wanted. Sampson was a top 50 recruit who came out of the gate like gangbusters last year than disappeared. He has skills.

So it's not like were this poor, talent-less overachieving team that's milking everything we have.

We can compete with what we have, especially in the down SEC. I'm skeptical because of my perception of the culture I've seen of the program, but I do want to see us when and I hope the kids can prove my perception wrong.

No joke. Dude has a great shot at the league IMO. Good size, can run, and has great touch around the basket. If he can hone in on a 15'+ jump shot, he could be a steal in the draft. He has been very fun to watch. I am waiting for him to give a Dikembe Mutombo finger wave the next time he throws a shot in the bleachers.

Not really....LSU will be mediocre with JJ as coach.

Is this a joke? That's all I see on here. Even after last night's win!! "JJ scedules cupcakes." "LSU beating the cupcakes." "Wait until LSU plays somebody good."

This is not an attack on you because it wasn't the point of your post, but folks on here can't stand the fact that LSU basketball is exceeding expectations. P.S., minus last season's setback, JJ had steady progressions every year. So, this year is no exception.

LSU basketball now has a 62 RPI going on the road to play #20 Thursday. With an upset win, we enter conference play on the bubble if not last 4 in the NCAAs.

A lot has to happen (including a win Thursday), but this LSU team is not garbage. I think this is a good team. If they can improve defensively, this team can make some waves.

Man I enjoyed the game last night. Fun game. I wish we would have played a little less tight in that 6 minute to 1 minute left stretch. We basically shelled up on offense and tightened up on defense. Once they tied it up we started playing looser again which was a big reason for the 10-0 ending. HUGE for confidence.

I get so frustrated occasionally with shot selection and the careless turnovers we had at times last night.

I really think we have some good to elite passers in the post with Duop and Craig. If you get the ball in to those guys and cut players to the basket, they will find open guys when the double team comes.

We can complain about post defense all we want but I think the biggest issue on defense is allowing penetration far too often. I think we are better this year at getting through screens but we have allowed far too much penetration that causes open post players.

I was very happy that we were able to stay out of serious foul trouble last night with a dribble driving team like C of C last night. Defense played pretty well last night.

Man the Wake game is gonna be a very tough one but what a huge opportunity it is for LSU.

Are we? I'll get we aren't losing to as many teams as we shouldn't as we did early last year, but who have we beaten that we should not have this year? Honestly?

And that's exceeding expectations?

I'm pulling for us jptiger, and my hope is we do exceed expectations.

But by that I don't mean the watered down expectations that are only so low because of what happened last year and why. I'm talking about the real expectations for and actually pretty decent team talent-wise, not so much talent as last year but not as bad as some would like to portray it.

A common theme under Coach Jones has been lazy passing. Passes that are soft and telegraphed that result in a turnover. Drives me crazy.

people want Johnny Jones to fail, so he'll be fired. And, then, we can attract a coach like Coach K from Duke. Yeah...no. This is LSU.

I agree that Jones is not the greatest Xs and Os guy. But, he can win in basketball. He can also recruit, though he has work to do in Louisiana.

But, my initial response wasn't really about Jones. It was about the miserable posters. The same posters that call for their pro teams to tank in order to (hopefully) receive a top draft pick. I cannot stand someone who literally roots against their team because they don't the coach (or something like that). It just doesn't register with me; I don't get it.

SoS, you are correct. I should re-phrase my original post. We don't do a bad job guarding the post 1 on 1. We get beat off the dribble and allow opposing teams to get into the paint. This then creates problems for the big guys down low. It either puts them in a bad position guarding their man or they get a foul on them trying to play help side. I agree, stopping penetration would do a world of difference for the bigs down low.

What are y'alls thoughts on playing a little zone? I'm not talking going strictly to a zone, just showing a zone every once and a while for a change of pace. Maybe when Elbert comes in? I also would not mind pressing with a guard heavy line up from time to time. A press may be good with a line up like - Mays, Sampson, Blankeny, Epps, and Reath. All those guys can run the floor pretty well. But, we could give up a ton of easy baskets.

I think the OP is pretty spot on. We're are a better team than last year with less big-time talent, but good talent and quality depth, something we didn't have last year. We have a good opportunity to be top 4 in the league and make it to the tournament. I think realistically we'll be .500 in the league and make the NIT. Honestly, what else were you expecting from this team. They play hard, but are still young. The sophomores are starting to figure it out better, but we still have freshmen playing significant minutes. Later in the season when Mays & Sims start to turn it up a little and we get Jenkins back, we'll be pretty stout on the defensive end. We're a quality point guard away from being really good. If Jenkins can come back and be that guy, we'll be fine. If we've learned anything from the football team, hold your judgments until after the season is over. So far CJJ is exceeding the expectations that we had before the season started. Geaux Tigers!

I truly think that to play good zone you have to coach zone defense exclusively. For most squads who dont truly understand zone defense, it basically forces them on their heels and takes away from any defensive intensity. I'm not a big fan of using zone unless its on random inbounds plays to force an offense out of their original inbounds play.

I do like trying to speed up an opponent by using somne 3/4 court trapping press or a full court man to man. Alot of times telling a player it's full court pressure pushes them to increase their pressure and intensity which is really the biggest thing lacking in our defense when we struggle.

Robinson gives them nothing. I would have thought in year 3, he could at least give you something. Even Tuba would posterize Robinson.

Once Victor and Reath get into foul trouble or have to play 40 minutes a night in sec play, it will be tough on this team to sustain anything.

if Jones hasn't done anything right defensively in his time at LSU, he's timing calling "pressure defense" has been pretty good. And, they've been successful with it in the past.
