Seems bizarre.

Thought it was an April fools joke then checked the calendar.

They need to either move the base into foul territory or change the running lane to fair territory. It makes no sense that the direct path from home plate to the 1st base bag is not considered the running lane.

Milazzo would've made the throw against Bama if they had it there.

I have no problem with it, other than it being green for some reason. It doesn't really change the game that much to make a difference, but everyone will complain about it because people are inherently set in their ways, specifically when it comes to sports.

I dont understand why they didnt just come up with the idea of a wider base that extends into foul territory as opposed to 2 bases

Why not get rid of the bizarre rule if catcher drops third strike. Three strikes you are out. Baseball nuance rules drive new fans crazy.
Cant wait to try to explain this one to my wife.

Really not that hard to explain, the base is just extended. No rules change

You’re looking at the game the wrong way. The defense can’t record an out with a live ball unless it’s caught.

I don't think it's a good long term solution. The base either needs to be 100% in fair territory or 100% in foul territory.

White is fair territory and what is still used to judge fair/foul balls. Also, the fielder can only use white.

From the link
quote:

If there is a play on the batter-runner and the batter-runner touches only the white portion of the double base and the defense appeals prior to the batter-runner returning to first base, it is treated the same as missing the base. Penalty: Batter-runner is out.

On extra-base hits or other balls hit to the outfield when there is no chance for a play to be made at the double base, the batter-runner may touch either the white or colored section of the base. Should, however, the batter-runner reach and go beyond first base, they may only return to the white section of the base.

I think it sounds more complicated than it actually is. If you’re running to first base to beat a throw, you run to the base outside the foul line (the colored one). If you’re rounding first base and heading to second, you can tag either base. Once you pass first base, you play from the white one like normal.

In other words, the colored base only exists for when you’re running straight through on a single, trying to beat a throw to first.

I do agree with others that it would make more sense to simply make the base wider, though.
