I think Andre Sams addition has freed up Brooks to return to NB full time. Brooks will still likely play safety as well if Burns or Sams are out.

I also wonder if Toviano’s play at NB has freed up the coaches to move Ryan to corner. I haven’t heard anything about Toviano this fall but he created a lot of buzz in the spring.

Although Ryan has struggled at times at NB, he is considered an excellent athlete. We always hear about how athletic he is and he might be best suited at boundary CB.

IMO, NB is probably the hardest position to play in the secondary because the wr has more options. At CB, you have the sideline to assist you.

Let’s hope the secondary can be figured out before the first game.

I think it’s a good sign if he’s getting reps with the 1st team over Duce. We would be fine with Zy & Duce starting at corner, so it’s a win-win if Sage is better than Duce.

Also all 5 of our starting DBs would be in state guys if Sage starts

How would it be a win if Sage is better than Duce? Duce has been a corner his entire college career.

I would love to see a depth chart for the secondary. I believe BK when he alludes to allowing players the ability to earn their spots. I don’t think anyone is cemented yet. However, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, all of our players are talented. (Sage, Welsh, Zy, Duece, etc)

Pretty simple, Sage could be taking to the position extremely well?

It’s not a binary, bud.

Which would be impressive for Sage to be a better option than an experienced guy like Duce.

I’m not knocking Duce’s ability. There’s a reason he was rated as a 4-star transfer

I’ll eat crow, but there’s no way in hell Duce Chestnut sits the bench for an Alexander, Ryan, Brooks, Sam, Burns lineup. Even if Sage Ryan takes a corner spot, Duce will be NB at worst.

He did Saturday. Brooks is our best NB, so if Duce plays it will be at cb

I don’t think Sage had passed up Duce. From all reports, Duce has been having a strong camp. I suspect that the staff is giving Sage work versus the 1s to test him versus they’re the best.

I kind of get the feeling that Sage Ryan was moved to corner to make room for Toviano at safety and help with cornerback depth.

The 1st team secondary is mostly figured out. Burns and Sam at S, Brooks at NB, Chestnut and Alexander at CB. It's the depth that's the issue. Ryan, Toviano, Allen are the back ups at S. Stamps and Welch (and I guess Ryan here too) are your reserve CBs.

Also, really hope I'm wrong about Sage Ryan. And he is getting time at corner BECAUSE he is that dynamic of a player, not because the staff doesn't love what they see at NB.

That would make sense. If that’s the case then he is ultimately our 6th DB & can go in at any position.

Chestnut played a ton of NB at Syracuse and from all the reports of him being our best CB through fall I just can’t see him riding the bench.

By all accounts, I was under the impression Zy Alexander was our best CB

Alexander has been the most “consistent” but reports through fall camp so far are that Chestnut has made the best plays and most gifted. Including interviews from players.

I thought Ryan got picked on a lot as a NB. He looked a step slow.
Perhaps he’s gotten a little faster, or Duce is not as advertised?

2 other RB’s started over Emery also. That won’t be how game 1 is either.

I think Ryan is a "tweener" for whom they are trying to find a position. He's not fast enough to be a true CB. He's too small and not physical enough to be a safety. They've played him at NB a lot, and while he has been ok there, he hasn't really been an instinctive playmaker. Perhaps LSU looks at Andre Sam who can step in and be a good safety and they want to make sure he is on the field.

I think Sage is at CB mainly because of a depth issue. They wanted to see how he matched up Sat but I would be shocked if he starts over Duce. I think Harris hasn’t panned out like they hoped and Johnson got hurt. Now they’re trying out some different options. Hopefully Harris gets his attitude right and can be a player for us at CB this year.
