It was ineffective in the VANDY game without him. You saw the next two games where Dylan Thompson got a week to prep with the 1's right?

Now granted the games were vs 2nd tier FBS schools, but Thompson lit up ECU for 400 yds passing and 3 TD's and UAB for close to 200 yds and 2 TD's after coming in after Shaw re-injured his shoulder near the end of the first 1/2. In just under 2 games, he has close to 500 yds passing.

In the Vandy game, there was a sense of panic after Shaw got hurt. You could see it in their eyes and actions. Connor Shaw IS the heart of the Gamecocks on Offense (as is DJ Swearinger on Defense.) I have never seen a gutsier performance on the football field than Shaw's game vs Vandy. He couldn't even lift his arm in the huddle, yet was out there throwing passing and making plays with his feet. But now after seeing Thompson come in and prove himself in game situations I think the team believes in him as well.

1) LSU struggles most against 3-4 defenses....SC is 4-3

Just a nit pick, technically SC runs a 4-2-5, not a traditional 4-3. It's true they play 4 on the line, but the 5th DB (a hybrid safety/LB called the spur the their scheme) backs the line to play run support or drops into pass protection based on a read of the QB and RB at the initial formation and movement at the start of the play.

Starting DT Byron Jerideau is day to day, as is backup CB Akeem Auguste.

Byron is a run stuffer that usually requires a double team. Heard spurrier wasn't excited about it in the presser.

I've never hidden the fact that I'm a fan of a mobile QB. I like what Spurrier has done with SC over the years. It absolutely amazes me how he maintains a consistently good defense over there.

He has adapted his offense to fit personnel. Hell, he's almost won big games with WR's playing QB. He's a real coach in many ways, with just enough character flaws to really earn my respect.

But, my point in telling you this is to say if I were the LSU defensive staff, I would force Shaw to carry the ball, and make him pay for any limited success he might enjoy. Unlike our offensive staff, our defensive guys are competent. They're going to make Shaw beat them on the ground, and if I get my way, they're going to beat him into the ground.

Your backup is not ready for the atmosphere Saturday night.

Akeeme has been out most of the season due to injury. He got a handful of snaps vs KY. He's recorded no tackles this year.

Big Byron is a big loss if he can't go (11 tackles for the year including 2 sacks). He's the strongest player on the team and takes up a lot of space in the middle. In lieu of Jerideau, Gerald Dixon Jr or J.T. Surratt will fill in if he can't go. Dixon has played in all 6 games and gives up about 10 lbs to Byron. He's got 3 tackles (1 TFL) and 1 int this year. Surratt has been played the last 3 games and has done very well also (3 tackles, 2 tfl).

Go watch the replay of the Mizzou game. Mizzou loaded the box to stop the run (something teams have been doing to us all year) and we beat them by going to short 5-10 yard dumps behind the linebackers. Shaw was 20-21 in that game (after Marcus dropped the first pass and then CS went 20 for 20....

I won't argue with that. Given both defenses, I think 7 to 14 points wins this game.

To me the game hinges on if LSU's "wounded" O-line handle SC's front 7.

Oh, no worries. Just giving more insight to the situation as I know you guys aren't as familiar with our specific players outside Lattimore/Clowney/Shaw.

Honestly, it looks to be a bit of a wash with the injury to Kwon Alexander. As they say, injuries are part of the game.

LSU's O-line was wounded before Florida, and even when it was healthy. On offense, LSU will have to get good field position, and hope for a busted play, too.

I'm actually pinning LSU's hopes on defense and special teams scoring. FG's from these two phases could be a difference.

I have no faith in our offensive staff. They have had infinite time to adapt between games and seasons, yet they show no willingness or capability.

Just as an FYI, here's a write up I did before the Missouri game for their fans. Since then, I think our O-line has gelled a little more with the movement of some key personnel and obviously Swearinger is back for that suspension and Jerideau is day to day. Hope this helps.

Hi ya'll. Looking forward to a fun and exciting game on Saturday. And wanted to give you a little friendly 411 on some gamecock players to keep your eyes on this weekend. We did this with the huskers before the C1b and it made watching the game much better.

Clowney, Lattimore and Shaw are names you have likely heard. Here are some you may or may not have heard of but are considered some of our "playmakers."

Since it's our strong suit, I'll start with the defense. FWIW, we run a 4-2-5 defense with one our DB's playing a safety/MLB position we call "the spur".

#98 Devon Taylor. Plays DE opposite of Jadevon Clowney. 6'8" 270 lbs. He cleans up alot of what Clowney flushes his way.

#70 Byron Jerideau Defense tackle. 6'1 320 lbs. Holds down the middle of the line. Big time run stopper. He doesn't always get that many tackles, but he takes up a lot of space in the middle of the D-line.

#54 Shaq Wilson Sr middle linebaker excellent pass rusher.

#21 Devonte Holloman Spur. A "disrupter". A lot of our defense depends on Holloman making a read off the QB (run or pass). Passing he drops to coverage (unless it's a blitz). Run play he plugs the last gap.

Our best DB, safety DJ swearinger is out for the game. Another DB is CB Vic(tor) Hampton.

Our DB's are our weakest link (which is why Dj's suspension really hurts vs you guys), which plays to your strong suit. Alot of the game will come down to weather or not our D-line can penetrate and disrupt the tiger passing game before the QB can get the ball to the receivers.

On offense you've heard of Shaw and Lattimore. Well Shaw was hurt vs Vandy (as I'm sure you've heard as well). Honestly, his performance in that game was one of the toughest I've ever seen in a football game. His status for Saturday is uncertain. His backup is Dylan Thompson, who's looked REALLY good vs lesser opponents the past two weeks, but he was abysmal during the Vandy game.

A couple of receivers to watch out for:

Ace Sanders (#1), Bruce Ellington (#23) and Damiere Byrd (#3). The downside is none of this trio is very tall at 5'8"-5'9" but they all have great speed. Byrd is out of NJ and ran a 4.3 40 yard dash in high school (Nj state record at the time). Bruce is a two sport star playing both football and point guard on the B-ball team.

Our O-line has played well at times and poorly at times. I consider it a work in progress. Their run blocking needs to improve and their pass blocking is adequate, but could be better.

We've been running a fair amount of two TE sets as well, with our two big TE's Justice Cunningham (#87) and Rory "Buster" Anderson (#81). I think this is in response to teams trying to stack the box to stop lattimore forcing us to beat them deep (ask ECU how that worked out for them).

Two freshman that might see playing time are running back Mike Davis (#25) and Shaq Roland (#4). Mike is a little faster than lattimore but not as powerful. He had 85 yds and scored his first TD on 4 carries vs UAB. Shaq was "Mr. Football" in SC last year. At 6'1" he's a bit taller than our other WR's. He's still learning the routes and the system but he's looked good when's he's been in. Caught his first TD last week.

That's about it. As I said earlier, I think this game comes down to our D-line & Db's vs your QB and receivers and if our Offense can move the ball with the (Missouri) tigers stacking the box to stop the run (everyone else has done it, so I anticipate you'll do it to).

Honestly this game scares me more than just about any other on our schedule minus LSU.

Good luck and may the best team win Sat.

I predict a repeat of last week. No offense tired LSU defense = a 4 quarter loss by a touchdown or so. Unless the team says frick it then it will be worse.

The fact is we are light across the defensive line, and Florida exploited that weakness

Stopped reading there. Our defense, and in particular our line, was gassed because the offense couldn't put together a drive that lasted more than 3 downs. Don't you watch football? A defense will tire if it can't rest. Florida didn't exploit any weakness. They ran it down our throats baecause the entire defense was playing on fumes by the middle of the 3rd quarter. Did you not watch the 1st half of the game? Our offensive line eats a dick. And Mettneberger has the release time of a 90 year old man with stage freight trying to take a piss. Those are the problems. Not the defense.

And I don't know what will happen against South Carolina. If we can't run the ball, we may not win the game (I won't say we won't because with a great defense like we have, we're always in the game). But if we can run the ball and run it well, I think we can beat anybody in the country, including Alabama.

South Carolina hasn't been punched in the mouth, and as it's been said before, everybody has a gameplan until they get punched in the mouth. Our defense will punch them in the mouth on Saturday.

The OP is right. And USC is better than Florida is. BUT, we have Tiger Stadium this time. If LSU wins this game, it will speak volumes, pun intended, as to the effect our fans have on this LSU team. The fact that LSU opened as a four point favorite blew my fricking mind. I like Lsu's chances against anyone in Tiger Stadium. The key will be crowd noise IMO, not Lsu O or fatigued D. How many drive killing penalties can the fans force will be the key if Lsu is going to win.

Mizzou loaded the box to stop the run

If LSU has to load the box as much as Missouri to stop the run, they have bigger problems. My defensive gameplan would include removing all other options for Shaw first, when field position is favorable. I really wouldn't mind giving up a few short gainers to Shaw. Shaw isn't Tebow or Newton. I would invite him to keep the ball, and make him second guess himself on his reads.

The more carries for Shaw on his side of the 50, the better. I don't think he can carry the load. Now, if his yards come from passing downs when receivers are covered, this would be a problem. But, from what I've seen, and I didn't see the Georgia game yet, Spurrier seems to put him at risk, even after narrowly escaping the Vandy game.

Punishing Shaw for taking that risk is probably LSU's best recipe in this one. I don't want to take the ball out of his hands by stacking the box. I would invite him to keep it, and make him pay the price.

USC is 2nd in the Nation in passing efficiency. So far, Connor Shaw has made very good decision with the football and will beat you with his feet, or take a sack before making a poor throw (Knock on wood, he's only thrown two Int's all year).

On the flip side, USC's kick off coverage has been pretty awful, and if not for the speedster Damiere Byrd on the kickoff coverage team they would have given up 2 or 3 TD's on kickoffs.
