NIL is completely out of control. The college football we have all known our entire lives is about to end. I wouldn’t be surprised if the larger schools break away from the ncaa soon and create their own league. The NCAA is to blame for this. They drug their feet on setting up NIL rules and basically just made it a free for all. It really sucks to see how quickly this happened but a lot of people saw this coming.

You have coaches tampering with players that aren’t in the portal. Professional sports leagues don’t even allow that. It’s usually a massive fine when teams are caught.

Every player is a free agent 24/7 and there is no salary cap when buying your team. No sports league in the world would allow this. It’s why they have contracts.

I expect that college football will become some type of lower level league with salaries and a salary cap. Players will have to sign contracts. I’d guess roughly 30 or so of the biggest schools will break away before this gets too bad. All the small schools will pretty much be screwed if this happens. But the NCAA did this to themselves.

Because everyone with half a brain knew it would turn into exactly what we’re seeing.

See whether you can find a book from 1990 titled "The Hundred Yard Lie" by Rick Telander. He more or less predicted this day would come.

I am afraid you are right. Not sure if they can stop the destructive avalanche of the NIL now. It will eventually feel like watching Arena football. The passion will be gone.

The coaches are out of control too. They are making major bank and don’t want to lose it or lose control over the players.

It was an unsustainable model, as the TV money and coaches salaries got out of control it was always going to end this way.

The NCAA fricked up fricked royally by not accepting the NIL reality but it would have only been a stopgap until that was challenged and defeated.

The ONLY hope is that this is a reset for the sport. This started getting out of hand when facilities and coaching salaries became arms races.

I’d prefer they create a DLeague for the NFL. Give players a base salary and allow them to make whatever money they can on endorsements or commercials. It’ll be a true minor league. Give HS kids a choice to go to college or enter the draft. If they go to college…

Establish some rules. Sell your autograph or merch for money, get paid to do clinics, etc. None of this bullshite where a car dealer hands a kid a million and calls it a day.

Yup that’s truly the only way they can salvage this at this point.

You realize that this is really our own fault, right? Our intense fandom and love for our schools, our willingness to sit through insufferable commercials, snarling traffic jams, ridiculously priced concessions, football 5 nights a week, etc…has allowed this sport to grow into a multi-billion dollar business. Of course the players deserve their fair share. But, it’s only so lucrative because of our willingness to provide the cash and eyeballs. If we want to see the problem, we just have to look into the mirror.

How? As long as you have underprivileged kids in poverty you will always have elite athletes playing sports. The only difference is there getting paid now. Just relax and enjoy my baw.

College football was never really what it purported to be and what some fans wanted to see it as. Bag men, money, preferential treatment, etc. to waaayyy waaaayyy back. In the book Junction Boys it says Bear Bryant told his money men to meet the competition. And they would pay for damage to bars, etc. that his players trashed.

I'm not sure if there is another set up anywhere in the world where college sports serves the kind of role that colleges do here in the US for football and basketball and baseball to a degree. It developed because the love of school combined with high level sports made it popular and the NFL had no reason to try to stop a free farm system.

NCAA didn't do it to themselves they did it to us fans that genuinely love the sport. Huge mistake by the leagues not having better preparedness for a cluster. The NCAA could give a damn less moving forward because its less issues they need to worry about now it's a free for all. The NCAA will be gone in a few years after all major conferences like the SEC bow out and self-regulate with other major conferences who do the same. It's inevitable and moving in that direction at a very fast pace because this isn't sustainable in any way.

I agree with your premise but do you have an answer? Everyone seems to think it’s a black & white issue yet no one can come up with a viable solution.

The changes happening now should have happened a LONG time ago.
This is the first couple of years of a new era.
shite is going to normalize , not spiral out of control. Y’all need to calm down.

In simple terms, the problem is no organization, planning, or structure. It’s just a free for all right now.
