Everyone agrees that our defense (or the defense that should have been) is now playing in the NFL. That fact alone has caused us to squander a very talented offensive team and possibly another potential national championship. This begs the question: Are we playing too many freshmen too early thus setting the stage for their early success and early defection to the pros?

Satan seems to hold them back a year or so to have them earn their playing time later in their college career rather than earlier. Sure, Bama has their early defections like everyone but that usually applies only to their superstars.

IMO, we lost too many, too soon because of this coaching philosophy. Obviously, there are a few freshmen who earn the right to start and contribute immediately. The coaching staff should be aware that those players will leave early. That being the case, recruiting should be structured to fill those gaps.

Unfortunately, our coaches (ultimately CLM) did not have a backup plan or a strategy for the number of defections this year. It was that lack of planning and foresight that has us with 3 losses and yet another year of a missed opportunity.

Sorry if this is Germans. I don't live on this site so that is very possible. Nevertheless, my frustration with our coaches and our need to change our philosophy regarding player eligibility prompted me to call it as I see it. I welcome your intelligent input. I know that may be asking a lot but here goes.

It's really a legit point. But early play time is one of our selling points too

That and Bama has players getting paid by agents so there's no real rush to run to the NFL.

Yeah I mean there's really no other explanation why Bama players never leave early, minus a few RBs. I could see if it was a group who wanted to win a NC, but these guys already have a couple.

Saban doesn't hold them back. Bama is loaded. Guys have to earn their playing time because of a loaded depth chart. LSU doesn't have that kind of depth. Competing for National Championships almost every year will have that effect on recruiting.

I feel like if we didnt play players early enough with more talent it hurt us. This season we had to play young people. In the past players like Eric Reid and pp7 kind of had to play and played well. It's a good point but I don't we can't compare everything to Bama. They don't have to play some of their players as early as we do

Drex while some of your observations are correct your logic is flawed. Let's say we are recruiting a 5 star defensive end out of Monroe. Saban says come to gumpland and win championships. Les says come to LSU and compete for championships and a ticket to the Nfl with early playing time.
As far as strategy to replace those early departures........ Do you think we just did not recruit players in the next class?

Check out our linebackers this year and tell me, do you think we were prepared to reload at this position ? We certainly did not recruit enough to fill that void this year. My logic is not flawed but our ability to fill immediate needs as a result of early defections is a flawed system.

If you red shirt an outstanding player you get two years play time out of him. If you play him as a freshman you get three years. It hard for me to understand why you'd want to redshirt anyone that could contribute and get some experience.

Like the other guy said, it's a selling point......but it's also a curse for one of the reasons you stated - not to mention inexperience which has showed for the last 2 seasons including this year.

Double-edged sword.

Early playing time is also a recruiting tool we use very successfully.

I think the thing that hurt us the most is players leaving early that shouldn't have.

Montgomery, Logan, Simon, Faulk, and Wing all should've come back.

Mingo, Minter, Reid, Ware, and Ford all made the right decisions. Mingo, Minter, and Reid were all at peak draft stock for themselves. Ware and Ford were gradually losing playing time to Hill.

That's great as long as u have so much talent stocked that u can play upperclassmen and still win. Some programs (us)have to play the talent early.

I was contemplating this very subject yesterday, wondering how Bama is able to hold onto guys that are obviously ready to move on in their careers and make millions, i.e. Fluker, Mosely, and the LB that came back last year among many others. Well, we got a little insight from Fluker's situation. He got his, I think, $2 million insurance policy put in place as a back up in case he got injured along with who knows what else the REC is funneling through various channels.

Keep in mind, the estimated economic impact of a MNC is $400 million, so in four years, and now possibly five, Alabama will have generated close to $2 billion or more for the state's economy and the REC members who own many of the businesses that benefit from the economic boom. Don't think there is not a "process" for the players to receive bonuses for staying an extra year. And the bonus does not come while they are enrolled because that would be illegal, but after they have completed their eligibility. And the bonus is much larger or has a multiplier if they win the MNC vs coming in second. (I am not saying this is happening, but it is very easy to surmise).

The above post is very adroit, but what is the REC?

A few years ago our coaches decided that we wanted to be the Kentucky of college football in that we were going to sell to our players that they would come in, play early, and get the the next level ASAP. The coaches openly admitted this with quotes like they want guys who would be 3 year players.

I thought at the time it was an interesting strategy, it certainly plays on the right buttons of a high school prospect and there was really no way to know if it would work or not at the time. It was a completely new idea.

I'm not ready to say that strategy was a failure yet, either. It certainly lends itself to having to rebuild a little more than just reload, but I want to see how we do next season before calling the idea a failure. I applaud them for at least trying to be innovative.

Red Elephant Club, basically Bama's 'booster' club. They have a reputation for "emhancing" the recruiting landscape at Bama.

We signed a freaking boatload of linebackers, what, two years ago? They just not have been very good, considering who played at that position this year.

I really can't believe CJ Mosley returned.

I also do not understand how even when Bama admits they had a player get paid, he still winds up continuing the season. I really don't get why not much more is coming of this and Fluker saying he got paid.. yet the Cam situation had all sorts of attention.. Bama is good, but they get every little break and nook and cranny go their way. Even when they don't win their conference.. or even division and lose at home they still get to play in the title game.. avoiding an SEC championship game.. They are just so dang lucky.

I'm not sure it's bc guys play as a freshman. Talented players are leaving as Juniors in today's time regardless and LSU has been blessed

Quality matter most. I was a little bothered by some of the stories I've heard in the recent past about so called LSU star players. Guys who get hyped up in the media and are slackers off the field. I watch some of these players on the field and would wonder why they just didn't have that kind of passion that I've seen in good players. Then I hear that they don't show up for workouts, meetings, etc.....
That kind of thing can cause problems on a team from the inside out.
