The reason for a down season? No simpler than the 2012 recruiting class...

Sure, the offense really needs some creativity, but our record would be the exact same if Chip Kelly were running this offense.

The problem lies no further than looking at upper-classmen leadership or lack thereof. This isn't a knock on our Jrs and Srs, it's just a fact that these two classes is what is hurting the team.

2011
Odell- NFL departure
Jalen Collins- peforming better, but not up to expectations coming out of HS
La-El Collins- Great player. Great senior.
Kenny Hilliard- Not up to expectations. Good Sr back.
David Jenkins- transfer
Freak- NFL departure. Mostly disappointing.
Mickey Johnson- Major miss on DT here.
Jarvis Landry- NFL departure.
Terrance Magee- decent player. About up to expectations
Ronald MArtin- not a great player. average-below average, but not much was expected.
Mett- JUCO/NFL
Jerrard Randall- transfer
Rasco- Not living up to expectations IMO. Decent player, but not what he was billed to be.
Quentin Thomas- Meh player. Not much was expected out of HS though.
Trai Turner- NFL departure
Corey White- ???? Major miss here.
Stephen Rivers- Transfer

This was a great class and led to a great 2013 season IMO. However, misses at DT with Freak not developing and Mickey Johnson/QT being meh really hurt the D last year. Not to mention the lack of a great safety in this group. A QB in this class would've REALLY helped to have this year after Mett left. We should've taken the chance on Prescott here instead of Rivers IMO.

2012
Kwon- Great pick up.
Vadal- hugely underperforming
Dural- Good pick up.
Edingburgh- major disappointment
Feist- Miss
dillon Gordon- meh
Trey Granier- transfer
Jerald Hawkins- Good pick up. Surprise. Not much expectations out of HS
Kavarha Holmes- GOne
Danielle Hunter- Only DL prospect this class. Disappointing so far. Seems to be workout warrior with a major body but not major skills. See Luke Sanders, Ej Kuale
Avery Peterson- meh
Debo Jones- Project pickup. Meh so far.
Jeremy Liggins- gone
Lamar Louis- Major disappointment so far IMO.
Jalen Mills- Good pick up, but seems to get beat a lot.
Lorenzo Phillips- apparent bust
Dwayne Thomas- Good pick up

Only ONE Dlinemen and it was a project player in Hunter? Are you kidding me? Losing Freak early really hurts now. Also, missing on Mickey Johsnon and QT really hurts too. QT wasn't expected to be much, so I'm not sure I understand why we didn't at least go get a few 3 star DT from out of state since LA was down in talent that year.

Summary: Problem areas on the team QB, DT, OL. The 2012 class killed this season just like the 05 class killed the 08 season. Since '11 left early, it was up to 2012 to carry this team. Unfortunately 2012 was a horrible talent year in LA and the staff seemingly got lazy on offering out of state talent to supplement.

QB- Should've had a good project after Mett. Should've gone with the in-state guy IMO. Especially if you wanted a mobile QB type.

DT- It is hard to have a Dline when all the players you expect to contribute are only Sophomores. Go look around the country. Very few good Dlines are filled with NO upper classmen. Not taking a DT or 3 in 2012 is inexcusable IMO. Godchaux, Lacouture, Herron, Bain, and Gilmore should all be rotation guys and not starting right now. Chucky Hunter and Jacoby Briscoe would sure be nice to have about now. That's not even taking into account that we didn't take any DEs in '12 either.

OL- Some decent prospects and surprises here (Hawkins, La'el,) But we missed bad on a few like Edinburgh, Austin, and Corey White. Still no reason other than coaching for the OL to be bad IMO.

Yeah, but at least we wouldn't have looked like the Keystone cops out there in a losing effort. I don't think most fans have a problem losing these two games. They have a problem with how bad we have looked losing these two games.

Don't agree with every single point in your assessment, but 2012's class is definitely a large part of current talent problem.

Hunter is a beast IMO and it wouldn't have hurt us if the other 11 dlinemen we signed the past 2 years actually stepped up and played like the top tier recruits they were.

I am with you on most of this, but how can you call Danielle Hunter a disappointment? I think he is one of the bright spots of the defense.

Our lack of depth on the D-line can easily be traced to these two classes. Great college defenses need at least 4-6 DT's to rotate, and 4 solid DE's. In those two classes we took a grand total of 2 Defensive Tackles, and 3 Defensive Ends.

I show them as #5 per 247. Their 2012 class was 11. Our 2012 class was 14.

Still rankings don't matter when you literally take ZERO DT in a class. You should always take Dlinemen and Olinemen in EVERY CLASS.

Auburn's 2012 class was chock full of Oline talent. THey had some lacking DL talent in '12, but supplemented it with Jucos in '13 which we didn't do. They also still have some '11 guys playing Dline. The ones we have are not good.

Contrastly we took 6 DTs and 5 DEs the past 2 classes. With Godchaux and LaCouture being the only 2 solid contributors.

Based on what? His play? Certainly not. I mean, I think he can become great, but his play agianst the run has been sub-par.

Look around the country's best defensive lines. LEt me know how many of them have sophomore DTs and no upperclassmen DTs. Only one sophomore DT i know of is worth anything and it's Nkemdiche. But he's a different caliber athlete.

Just give them a chance to come around. Lacouture was a high 3 star. This is the type of guy that doesn't hit his potential until Jr/SR year. He can be good, but it's far too early for him to be dominant or even above average.

Godchaux, Teuhema, and Lacouture have all shown flashes. Not every 4 star recruit pans out. Look at many past classes. Only slightly more than half pan out as expected. Surely out of the guys we signed the past 2 years we'll have 2 more step up.

The big worry for me? Look at our DL targets in the '15 class. NOBODY....

Solid post. The reason this team is so bad right now can be attributed to recruiting strategy failing and talent evaluation failing. I think that they realized they were going to have a problem on the DL a year late. They took a bunch in 2013 and could have spaced it out between 2012 and 2013.

This was a year where we struck out on the following.

We may have also went after Quay Evans at one point as well.

good post. nice work.

recruiting is a crap shoot. Anybody remember Xavier Carter?? Lightning fast with the hands of a 2 year old. He was a 5 star bust. I think our expectations of a 17 yr old coming out of HS predetermine what a player should be. Kids dont always translate

Stop analyzing players bc you stink at it. A beast would have dominated the rent-a-win teams we played. He was invisible. He was too slow to get around their tackles. The only exception may be that he doesn't seem to try to beat any tackles with speed, so I wonder if they don't want him speed rushing. He has had the jump clearly a few times and pulls back watching the qb take his time.

Great post. The major issue is that the 2013 class, while it appears to provide help to the OL, does not help the DL. Herron, Bain, and Gilmore all appear to be underperforming. Bower and Lacouture are nothing special. If Valentine and LMFAO aren't up to billing, where does the help on the DL come from? Don't get me started on Chavis and the LB's.

Dude, didn't you think that pic where he's all jacked up and veiny???

If that doesn't say beast, I don't know what will.

Y'all are retarded. Hunter LEADS THE TEAM in tackles, has 2 sacks, 8 QB hurries, 2 forced fumbles, and a 25 yard fumble return for a TD. He's a beast.
