eh imo...i think its because of the late tip on a weeknight...the opponent doesnt really help this either...I remember Bobby Knight made a fuss about late tip offs when he was at Indiana because they werent getting the tv exposure he thought they should have and the crowds suffered

Well, 26 years of mostly mediocrity or much worse killed enthusiasm for hoops. Sure, the Stromille and 06 teams were good but episodic and infrequent success is no way to nurture or fuel fan interest.

Right, because Auburn is the epitome of consistent basketball success. Their environment on Saturday absolutely blew the PMAC out the water.

AU won the SEC two years ago. Went to Final Four last season. And currently has the best (overall) record of any SEC team. That's three years of sustained success. Wade is working on it at LSU, but we only have one year of great success...preceded by several years of, at best, wildly inconsistent results.

Plus, fans tend to gravitate to the sport that is winning big. For AU, the football program has won, but not big on a consistent basis, and the fans don't care about baseball. Auburn basketball filled a championship contender void and the people have gravitated to it. The popularity of LSU baseball grew out of largely the same circumstances.

No one. And I mean no one, gave a shite about LSU baseball in the early-mid 80's. But then the early 90's came and LSU won the CWS. That was at the same time the football program was bottoming out and the basketball program, though still VERY popular, was going through some years of seemingly unfulfilled potential. Baseball quenched the championship thirst of LSU fans. So they gravitated to it. Then they did it again in '93 all while the football program was at it's lowest point in decades (maybe every) and the basketball program started a decline. For the most part LSU baseball had the 90's to itself as the ONLY championship contender on campus. As a result, fans showed up in droves.

To some degree that is what is happening at AU right now. It is the championship-level beacon of hope for their fans (even though football is still king). They are experiencing what LSU baseball experienced in the 90's. But remember, it hasn't always been that way. Even under Pearl. He was there nearly 3 years before excitement started to build. And it was only AFTER they became a major player in the SEC that fans started to show. If Wade can keep building, the people will come. For christsakes! LSU sells out freaking gymnastic meets!

It would be great to see the students moved back to the sidelines. But that is a chicken or egg scenario. They aren't showing up in droves now. So do you wait until they do BEFORE moving seats. OR, will they show up in droves WHEN you move the seats?

If you look at the lower bowl, 70% of it is made up of 70 plus year olds, who are just using their tickets because they are wealthy and can let everyone know they are wealthy.
Therefore they just sit down and watch the game and cannot wait for it to be over so they can go home. BUT THEY EXPECT THE TIGERS TO WIN THOUGH AND WHEN THEY DONT THEY ARE THE FIRST ONES TO COMPLAIN!

It is the 80 year old Glendas and Fred's. They makeup half of the crowd. Their seats should be student section seats.

Brilliant idea. Take away the seats from the fans who actually show up for the games.

Great idea. We dont want them at the games anyway. Students may come if they had better seats.

Can't wait for the atmosphere next week!
If we beat Alabama Saturday, the Kentucky game will have a pretty good atmosphere.

The spoiled brats and their precious phones might even fill the Student Section because it will be a big social "See and be Seen" event for them.

both preferably.

Does the athletic department still incentivize student attendance?

I know in years past they used to have games(basketball, gymanstics, etc) as priority point earners, which would help you move up in the rankings for football season. I'm not sure of the difficulty these days in obtaining the student tickets for football, but it would encourage overall student fan participation in all sports.

Does the department do anything to cultivate a culture for the fans or students? Still do maravich maniacs/roar corps or whatever they call themselves?

Maybe the department is trying to do these things, I have no idea. Of course having a winner helps, but you do need to market and create an atmosphere where it's the place to be. You can't just hope a light switch turns on and the place becomes rowdy again overnight.

As one poster specially commented, he’d be more motivated to attend the game if the student seats were better, which, and I’m just spitballing here, could improve the opportunity for the student section to shoulder the burden of energizing the crowd; being closer to the action and in front of non-students, at the very least, would positionally allow the students to actually lead the energizing of the crowd. And, being closer to the team would make it easier to energize the team...maybe. So, if a couple thousand students feel the same way, there’s your attendance.
Like at Auburn! (And the AC/PMAC in the 80's)

I attend every home football and basketball game and understand that this may be tough for you to understand.
As you progress through life, it is not fair. If you make good decisions much more than you make mistakes, you will be given the ability to support causes in which you are passionate. Many chose not to give or donate financially and keep their success and wealth to themselves. Others share their good fortune by donating to causes that are near and dear. No matter the age, anyone sitting in good seats at any event at LSU either give their own or company money to support TAF. Nevertheless, without these folks, facilities, coaches, buildings and many other things on campus would not be possible.

I thought it was a good night for the game it was. Solid 7/10 crowd for me. I expect 10/10 for Kentucky.

Is it common for a basketball staff person to hand out props to student sections? LSU gives out tge fat heads, etc.

It just seems like that should be something the students come up with. Seems faux....manufactured.
