The Inexplicable Les Miles
Posted on 12/1/09 at 10:59 am
Posted on 12/1/09 at 10:59 am
At this point, what else can be said about the man that doesn't stick? Adjectives like goofy, bumbling, awkward, aloof, hard-headed, idiotic, short-sighted, daring, consistent, damn-strong, resilient, cocky, calculating, faithful and diligent have all been used to inexplicably describe Les Miles, the LSU Football Coach that nobody really seems to even know, or love…the unlikely Yankee riddle strangely personified, whose true nature and personality is seemingly wrapped tightly in a clandestine conundrum, predictably derided in Tuscaloosa, and trapped safely inside the unyielding labyrinth that is the LSU Football Office. Nevertheless, in 2009 he can be called a winner, having improved upon last season's stinging, 7-5 setback. Toward ten wins Miles looks to his most intrepid, and feared domain-the postseason-where he is undefeated (4-0) as the LSU Head Football Coach.
In this exclusive piece for TigerDroppings.com, the place where agriculture finds culture, and ignorance is certainly bliss, we'll examine the fantastic year in the SEC that was 2009, assess the Tigers heading into the bowl season and preview the upcoming meteoric "tilt of the new century" between Florida and Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.
Ten Bowl Eligible Teams in 2009 – An "Up-Year" for the League
The Southeastern Conference was deplored a year ago for having a "down year." The Florida Gators, like many Republican voters often do, ignored the media, and won a national championship en route. With ten bowl eligible teams, 2009 was unequivocally an "up" year for the nation's most powerful and prolific league. Moreover, Alabama and Florida represent two of the nation's finest undefeated teams, regardless of conference affiliation. It is only fitting that these two teams will meet to play for the chance to play for a national championship.
Les Miles Laughs Last Over Faux LSU Fans
These are the same people that come late and leave early during big ball games. I call them "Nega-tigers." These shallow, cold and timid souls know neither good sportsmanship, nor how to be a fan. They flood message boards with negative rants about the LSU Football coach, Les Miles, and even the young players themselves. They try and spin the Tiger Football program into a funk with their hateful words. These same people can be heard on the radio waves doing exactly the same thing. These "fans" want Les Miles to fail.
Unfortunately, the Negatigers did not get what they wanted Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. Many that left early trying to admit defeat were duly shocked. These fake Tiger fans need to realize that Les Miles is going nowhere, much to their chagrin. Furthermore, he's on his way to back-to-back national recruiting championships, as he already has a Top Five Class committed. More coaching changes are surely on the way. Les won 75% of his regular season games. So, don't throw away the tethered "Fear the Hat" Tee Shirt just yet. For it may, in the long run, turn out to be priceless.
Miles' victory over Petrino and Arkansas, coupled with the unlikely debacle in the Egg Bowl by Ole Miss, turned out to be huge for the Tigers and particularly, their embattled head coach. The win over Arkansas gave the Tigers a 9-3 regular season record, an assured spot in a bowl game entertaining the nation's toughest league's third-best team, and for Miles the clear credit for having navigated the difficult slate better than nine other SEC coaches. Moreover, Miles did this in his fifth year, with what was basically a team that was completely "his," having recruited nearly every player on the LSU roster. Nick-Saban-loving "Negatigers" need to be reminded that Les Miles has won more games in his five-year LSU stretch than Nick's in Baton Rouge. Miles has won over 50 games in five years in the nation's toughest league, with a national championship and an SEC Championship to his credit. Admit the guy can coach. Part of that is making changes, and Miles is getting ready to improve his staff once again.
Certainly blemished from the embarrassing Ole Miss setback, Miles nonetheless remains the salty warrior. Warriors are confident in their arena. Miles is no different. As the holidays approach, they do with the scent of impending victory for the Ohio native. For like perhaps no other coach, Miles uses time wisely to employ an effective game plan, as he has yet to lose in four post-season outings as the LSU Head Football Coach. A bowl game victory will give Miles ten wins in one of the SEC's greatest seasons, and an assured Top Ten final ranking. For that he should not have to apologize to any true Tiger fan.
The SEC Championship Game: Tim Tebow's Destiny Personified
Greg McElroy--meet Tim Tebow, College Football's Adonis in pads. Greg, you don't look like him, sound like him, play like him, or have the kind of impact on your teammates and the world around you like he does. However, you and your team can beat him and his on Saturday, if you can overcome the obvious inevitable, unfair comparisons toward a near-perfect performance in the biggest game of your young life. This is your one shot, Mac. There are no mulligans in the SEC Championship Game. Make it count, son. This is the kind of pressure G-Mac is under. Bear with him.
Greg McElroy only must not pull a "John Parker Wilson" on Saturday night. It is important the junior avoids the fall. Mark Ingram has been gimpy of late and Trent Richardson is still a freshman. Alabama's offensive skilled talent will be pressed into play against Florida's experienced and deeply talented championship defense. In this contest, experience-and more notably, championship experience, could prove to be everything, as Alabama's quarterback and skilled players have yet made plays on such a large stage.
Everybody's All-American on Display
Tim Tebow's legend is as big as his game. This contest will showcase his phenomenal talent and career in the Southeastern Conference. Tebow is competing for a third national championship and possibly a second Heisman Trophy. Given his recent eclipsing of Herschel Walker's long-held touchdown records, Tebow is all but a shoe-in if the Gators overcome the Crimson Tide. Known for his daring exploits on and off the field, Tim Tebow--the missionary, the devout Christian, the all-everything quarterback, will be the guy everyone will be tuning in to watch. I even suspect that some Alabama fans secretly respect and admire him, as his talent is as large as his unique persona, and the two have worked wonderfully well for him in his huge role for the Gators. For Tim Tebow, Saturday is his Swan Song-a final act for a football virtuoso, and one of the more remarkable Southern sports cult figures to emerge in many, many years.
Everyone talks about Alabama's defense, but Florida's is just as nasty. Moreover, the Gators have big game experience, returning every starter from last season's championship team. Alabama is not going to be able to run the ball down Florida's throat. McElroy will have to make plays if the Tide is going to score with the Gators. In the end, Tebow's leadership and insatiable drive and determination will overcome the Tide and their championship-green junior signal caller. I like Florida by two scores.
A Shot at Ten Wins
When Ole Miss dropped a Baby Ruth in their proverbial post-season punch bowl by losing to State, they made Les Miles' 9-3 record look pretty darn good. If Miles can make it a perfect five straight bowl game victories as head coach he'll run the Tigers' 2009 record to ten wins and virtually assure himself of another top two or three recruiting class. Moreover, with a new offensive coordinator and renewed competition within

Did seriously just use the phrase, "back-to-back national recruiting championships"?
Why don't you get some shirts printed up?

Miles has won plenty of games.
However a big issue many of the so called nega-tigers have is that the program has clearly slipped under his watch.
LSU was in the top tier of SEC teams when he took over. Clearly they are not right now. Celebrate him when/if he gets them back to big boy status in the league.

I thought they went 8-5 last year... but alas I do not have a blog on TD.com so I could be wrong.

Too bad there were just as many "posi-Tigers" that left the game also. Unless you have some kind of definite numbers to dictate how many were "Negi".

Really 10-3 and a Capitol One Bowl win is not considered one of SEC's greatest seasons?

You mean only beating teams that have won 7 games or less and doing it barely at that doesn't mean we are top tier anymore?

He is referring to the fact that LSU will have 10 wins in a year the SEC hs 10 bowl eligible teams, including two undefeated teams, and a guaranteed spot in the National Championship game. This year in the SEC, as a whole, is one of the better seasons the SEC, as a whole, has had.
ETA: Thanks, Chicken. It's not enough you run the site, now you have to take thoughts out of a lowly poster's head...

I would say the program is in the exact place as when he took over...2nd in the West and headed to the Cap One Bowl.

When he is referring to one of the SEC's greatest seasons, he's referring to the fact that 10 of 12 teams are bowl qualified. I'd have to agree that this is "one of the SEC's greatest seasons".

First of all, LSU was 9-3 when Miles got here, and they are 9-3 this season.
I celebrate my tigers winnning, I dont root against us to lose, just so we can get rid of Miles.
Oh yeah and how are we not in the top tier of SEC teams... We are literally 3rd in the SEC dude, not to mention Fl is about to lose Tebow, we are on the cusp and life is good (could be better like 10-2 better)....
