Maybe because White was the best at it in practice?

Well considering 80% of the talent on this team are freshmen I'd say it's a pretty good idea, genius.

I absolutely hate this argument. He can get hurt on any defensive snap. there is not an increased risk of injury returning punts. So essentially, he gets 5 more snaps a game. not a big deal. If he wasnt returning the punts he would be blocking the gunners.

Somebody show me a stat where you increase your injury risk on special teams..............you cant because it doesnt exist

No way! These guys do not yet have the physical maturity or mental toughness to handle this. A fumble on a punt return is the second worst kind of turnover after a pick-6. Although not on a punt return, Brandon Harris' fumble against SHSU was exactly the kind of mistake the unprepared make.

Every player on our team who has the physical and mental toughness and ability, as well as the coaching on ball security, is a starter like White. It would hurt to lose any of them.

RR is better than White, IMO

Yeah, and Tehuma is our best pass rusher. Common Rant mistake. RR is our third best defensive back after Mills and White. He is probably our best man cover guy, but that's only about a third of the position. We spend most of our time in zone, and he's no where near as good as Mills and White in zone.

I get that it's a violent sport. I get that if you were worried about injuries you would leave your studs on the bench. I agree with the poster who said "thank God the OP is not our coach." I said that from the beginning. Whoever posted that LSU traditionally uses their best athletes on kick returns makes a very good case. That makes sense to me. It remains to be seen how good White is at returning punts......as most posters have written "wait and see."

As for studies....this took five minutes to find on Google:

“Effects of Time in Competition, Phase of Play, and Field Location on Injury Severity in High School Football” by Ellen E. Yard. Some of the highlights as it relates to injuries for high school football players:

•32.7% of injuries on kickoffs and punts were “severe” (defined as 21 or more missed days), compared to 19.3% on other plays.

•20.3% of injuries on kickoffs and punts were concussions, compared to 10.9% on other plays.

Maybe the injury rate is different in college and Pros than in high school.

When are people going to stop with this? Have you people even looked at return injuries even a little? Looked at the best known returners, even a little. Damn, just damn.

Study results posted. The question remains, is T. White in the class of PP7, Chad Jones, et. al as a punt returner. Right now, no. I hope he becomes that.

The study did not focus on returners, which is the key. This is for all special teams players.

I don't know if it did or not. If it touches a defender on a punt it should be dead where he touched it.

I've been saying Trey Quinn or Charknado. But I feel Trey Quinn is too valuable now.

Quinn was back to return the final two punts Saturday night but neither was returnable.

That's not a rate, that's a difference in severity.

.

The study didn't have to focus on returners. This particular study found that if you step on the field on special teams you are more likely to be injured than a defensive or offensive player. If that is the case, draw your own conclusions on who is most likely to be injured. It's not a stretch to say the KR is more likely to be injured than the punter.

And does it make it better if the severity of injury is higher than rate. According to this study kick returns would seem to be the place you are most likely to see serious, season ending injuries.

Wrong. Based on the quotes provided, it says that injuries on special teams are more severe than injuries in other parts of the game. It (based on the quotes) says nothing about injury rate.
