F all you haters talking about a reach. A TRUE 3-4 DL is about as rare a commodity as any in the NFL. They had to take him, and they happened to be picking 3. If they had passed on him Cleveland would have taken him at 5 because people who understand the 3-4 understand his value. Good for Tyson and good for KC!!!

outright lie

3-4 teams used to save money by drafting their DEs later on, b/c you can get DE/DT tweener for the position

the 3-4 is just vogue now, so this position has gained value, which means the 3-4 has lost value and the fad won't last longer

Yeah. Belichick is drawing up his new 4-3 D as we speak. Pittsburgh too. (Those two have won 5 of the last 8 Super Bowls by the way) When run correctly, the 3-4 is great and teams are very successful. Its rarely run because finding the right personnel, like Tyson, is very difficult. But that's ok Slow, keep talking as confidently as you do and eventually what you say will be true.

Yep, only a die hard unrealistic LSU homer would think the Tyson at 3 wasn't a reach. Except for, you know, the actual NFL GM and entire front office of the team who get paid to evaluate these things and just actually made the pick. But you're right. I'm hopelessly irrational.

you know why?

b/c they could build 3-4 Defenses on the cheap.

they were pretty much the only 2 teams running it, so they could sit to wait on a vince wilfork, banta cain, james harrison, aaron smith, etc. these tweeners didn't fit in a 4-3, so they slid on draft day

they fit in the 3-4, and were great values

now they're not great values, and there will be a shift back to the 4-3 in a few years

not true

it's not run well b/c the last time the 3-4 was vogue it was like 1992 and teams adapted

the tampa 2.5 became the vogue D, and most teams went back to the 4-3 and developed cover-2 principles

Yep, only a die hard unrealistic LSU homer would think the Tyson at 3 wasn't a reach

phillip merling was the #1 3-4 DE picked last year, and a similar prospect to tyson (slight smaller, but more athletic)

you know where he got picked? the beginning of the 2nd round. that means tyson's position went up ONE ROUND in a year

I hear ya Slow. But there obviously wasn't as much of a need last year. No demand by teams that run the D, means the player is obviously going to fall.

This year, KC, Cleveland, Denver all had needs for 3-4 DL. So obviously, the value for that position went up.

Would it have been better if they could have traded down? Sure. But to take the best player available at a position that is absolutely critical for the D you want to run is tough to consider a reach.

It doesn't matter to KC that most teams don't run that type of D, so that player has less value for other teams. The bottom line is, they CANNOT do what they want to do on D without a player like Tyson, so his value to them is worth a high pick.

During last year's draft pre-saeson for this year, Kiper even had TJ as the #1 Senior coming out of this draft! So no, it's not a reach!

Does this mean that LSU has had a defensive lineman picked first in the draft in consecutive years? Dorsey &Tyson. The Chiefs have figured out New Englands secret to success. With the Colts winning with Addai and Booger.

This is a true statement. Tyson has the potential to be an excellent DE in the 3-4 defense. Marquis Hill could have developed possibly. But, neither will be better than Leonard Marshall. Just ask Joe Montana.
