This guy can flat out get it done on the recruiting trail. He has worked with great coaches during his career and has ties to the hot beds in recruiting. Even after his time at Florida State, he was still able to reel in talent from these areas to Clemson. Look at his resume and read about his accomplishments first then you decide. This is a huge hire for us. Kevin Steele had more to do with the success at Bama than Kirby Smart ever did. Steele was the man behind the scenes pulling in the talent. Slam dunk all the way.

He he can bring in top 3 recruiting class year after year that is all that matters. Let's see if he has any impact this year. He has 3 weeks.

Who out recruits LSU? If you follow recruiting like I do you would clearly see a school named Alabama. Remove Kirby Smart's name and Kevin Steele's name from the resumes and compare the 2. If not even close which one if the most qualified. Losing Frank Wilson hurts more than losing Coach Cam. Recruiting is the life blood of being successful and winning. That's why everyone wants Coach O for this same reason.

Wait, but it's precisely his resume as a DC that has caused the melt.

Jennings was a 4 star recruit. We have 2 DL that were 5 stAr recruits and they ride the pine. The actual need to develop and coach a top defense is what this team needed not better recruiting.

Issues in recruiting ? Not as bad as most teams but could be better. Have you checked out our latest DL and LBs commits? You must not have. Chavis left the shelf pretty much empty before he left.
So I guess every name that was dropped on this board for a potential hire never had a bad year as a DC?

the next 3 weeks will tell a lot. Right now we have 1 DE, no DT's, and no LB's and very few prospects for getting any. It's looking very bleak in that area of recruiting at this time. He is starting in a big hole and with little time left. Although it's a bit unfair, let's see what he can do in 3 weeks. Even if he can land 3-4 mid level prospects, it would be a huge accomplishment. I will be watching and quietly judging his performance.

If he can kill it on the recruiting trail, he may redeem himself. I'd be happy for a top 30 defense if the offense would show a pulse next year.

He needs to convince younger players to stay at LSU instead of fleeing to the NFL early.

as far as actual coaching talent, I don't think you can judge him on what he did as a DC at crappy schools, now he is at LSU, he is in the big time. As long as he is not a total bonehead, such as Tepper, or out of touch with current times, such as Cam, he should be just fine. I already like that he doesn't seem to be infatuated with teeny tiny (and sometimes slow, Welter) LB's, such as Chavis was. He seems to like big fast strong athletic types. That in itself is a big upgrade. I don't get the negativity towards this hire. It's an upgrade over the overhyped and under performing Chavis. I feel like the sky is the limit with this guy. Got a good feeling about him.

Because he has worked with great coaches it trumps his coloring book of a resume?
