re: Stadiums need to accept that watching on tv is currently a better experience

One of my favorite things as a kid was to go out all day and hang out with my dad and his fraternity brothers cooking, watching 40 year old guys do stupid shite, walking around campus seeing everything, etc. Part of the draw for me growing up was tailgating all day before. It was until a few years ago.
With day games, I have to get up at 5am to start cooking and get out to make sure people dont eff with the tent. More of a chore having a day game. I could sleep late and go watch the game at my buddy's house much easier. Day games suck arse, and all of our big games are at 2:30 this year

I for one won't go to any games in person again unless I am given free 50 yard line primo seats or a suite or something. I enjoy the comfort of home.

I'll go, but I am much more likely to go to a night game than a day game, no matter who it is

Yes, but not long ago all games were not on television. We didn't always have the option to sit home and watch on big screen HDTV's. As cost goes up, value of being there goes down. I'd still rather be in the stadium but having a 50 yard line seat in my living room or back patio is getting increasingly more attractive every year.

Yes !! Because clearly there are NO fat people tailgating or at the games !

Also, parking was better (less people and more free lots) and tailgating on campus was free and unregulated which opened up even more places for the average person.
The more regulated tailgating is on campus and the more expensive, the more people get pushed out to the rapidly shrinking lots way away from the stadium. Many of those lots keep shrinking due to new construction and idiot cops closing lots that are only half full.
The more you nickle and dime the college football fan, the more you hassle him with added security and barricades, the more you detract from the game with ads and piped in music, the more you detract from the game day atmosphere with tailgating restrictions and parking passes severely curtailing on campus tailgating, the less likely fans are to show up or stay the whole time.

The plan is to go pay per view shortly.
.. makes so much sense. Don't come to the game, we'll charge you $39 / game to watch it home.
Reach 1,000s more, make $1,000,000s more.
It's the long game, people. The Long Game.

i agree with everything you said but none of these things will ever happen because they would all cost a lot of MONEY. They are still selling out every game so they are already making all their money, they rather make more money than less. Only solution said on here that would actually make financial sense is to sell beer but that would stir up all kinds of other problems.

It would be interesting to see if the cost of implementing just one of the suggestions could be offset by the increased concessions revenue from more people coming to the game and/or staying longer.

LSU is resting on their laurels, they are milking every oz of built up good will. Over the last 4-5 years they have greatly diminished the game day experience, for many of the reasons you say here.
I go to EVERY game and stay until the last play Every game. But it's wearing me down. For me, the most ludicrous thing is that crappy scoreboard, dominated by an near-obscene amount of advertising.
When I go to games now I get the same feeling I get when they give me that cheesy mini-bar at a hotel. I went to one in Hawaii two years ago, and I literally made them take their freakin' 14 dollar macadamia nuts and 12 dollar iced coffee out of my room. Don't be so obvious in your belief that I am an ATM. Let me enjoy myself.
And why the hell, can't I get a timely score ? Are you kidding me? Is it really that hard?
The OP is correct. LSU needs to get ahead of the curve here and be innovative. Serve the fans more, and the corporate sponsors less.

Why would LSU pay extra money to implement some of these improvements when people keep paying for the tickets?
Isn't there currently a long waiting list for season tickets (without making a serious donation)?
I think the tickets are a bit overpriced at face value for most games, nevermind the TAF fees. But I think some people like the status symbol of being a season ticket holder more than they like going to the game. Or maybe having guaranteed tickets for that one big home game we have each year means that much to them. Or maybe their just OT rich and DGAF. It's crazy how many primo seats get wasted, even for good SEC games.

This.
The point I have been trying to make is that this phenomenon is about to come to an end. I have 6 tickets. Don't use them all, and most of the time I have trouble giving them away. . I'm bailing on at least 2 of my seats next year, if not 4. I pay too much and see almost no return. I have friends who are thinking the same way. There have to be lots of other people doing the same.

Well have the people in a position to make a decision ever had to grind out a game day experience from the little guy's perspective.Start from 20 miles away and drive on campus and find parking, try tailgating, and make your way to the upper deck seating.Reverse the process and you'll see how challenging it is to support the Tigers at a home game.Maybe supporting the fans game day experience is more important than the school realizes. And replacing Gary and Vern on the CBS broadcast would certainly speed up the game.

1) Entertain - The flow of the game is now designed for the home viewer, not the stadium goer. The long stretches of television time-outs are absolutely killer. You have to use that time to entertain. Cartoon car races and tweets from the parking lot won't cut it. Take a page out of Georgia's playbook and show live action cut-ins to other games. Do something to fill in the boredom.
I woudl rather them show replays form teh game i give a shite about

2) Offer wifi - Accept that people are absolutely addicted to their phones now. Making people go 4 hours without their phone is asking a lot. Figure out a way to allow wifi access so people can make calls, look at scores, update facebook.....do something during the long breaks.
Terrible reason not to go to a game, or to leave early.
quote:
3) Students need to get over themselves - One of the few advantages the stadium experience has over watching television is crowd interaction. The symbiotic relationship between the band and the crowd is what makes LSU special. If you make up vulgar lyrics to band songs, the songs stop and the interaction stops. Right, wrong or indifferent....that's just the way it is. Less interaction makes for a less enjoyable experience.
The rest of the stadium could hardly give a shite about the band 90% of the time. I've sat with eh old people, they don't do the cheers.

5) Make the nosebleed experience fun too - You can't charge people $70 to sit with the same view as a satellite and expect them stay. Would you rather sit in the stratosphere and watch ants run around or watch it on a 60 inch HD tv. Which brings me to.......
$70 seats are gonna get oyu a good view. IDK who is paying $70 face value for nosebleed seats, but that is waht you get buying second hand.
quote:
6) Embrace the big screen - Why in the world would you buy an enormous big screen and then cover 2/3's of it with advertisements. You can show ads periodically but to have ads plastered over 2/3's of the screen is pretty ridiculous, Clear off all of that crap and show the crowd things on the big screen....not just 1/3 of a big screen.
I agree, but we are putting to big screens in the new expansion, and need the revenue money this year. Lets let this on play out.
quote:
7) Sell beer - Somehow WVU figured out how to do it. So should LSU.
I am all for this, but it would be a shite show. Could you imagine saturday if people were drinking? like 1000 heat strokes.

Eta: If I bring in liquor, I am bringing a fifth or something. If I can get beers inside, I wouldn't be bringing the boose, or at least not as much

Calm down old man river. Why did you feel the need to personally insult him?
maybe i was too strong but it seems to me that todays generation is spoiled and want everything done for them. who the hell goes to a sports stadium and expects good food or low prices. at LSU, everyone tailgates and eats before the game. and why does one have to be connected to the internet 24/7.4 hours where you have to relate to human beings face to face instead of on a damn device is an imposition? gimme a break. we have family get togethers and the youngsters keep their damn nose in a device and cannot carry on a conversation. i'm saying, many young people today expect the world to come to them instead of gettng out there and meeting the world and influencing what the hell is happening. all of that and your right, i should not have insulted the man.
