Spread Offense

I beleive the spread is an offense that will eventually die a slow death, in the SEC especially. Though it has some upside, the down side is just too great with the caliber of SEC players. The spread runs a greater risk of injury to the quarterback with them running so much. To find the rare qb who can run and pass and stay healthy is a chore. ie: West Virgina and Oregan losing their shot at the BCS NCG. I know some will say that the spread got them to the point of competing for a MNC, but its like rolling the dice, for me anyway. Take a good sound running game and a smart qb who can make better than avg. throws and I think you stay more competitive in the long haul.

I disagree, I think the spread is just starting to become popular and will be around awhile, at least until defenses start to figure it out, right now the best they can do it contain it or minimize the damage. It's pretty much the reason we won a national title last year. It spreads the defense out and forces them to be alot faster and to make quick reads.

So are we talking about the spread or spread option here?
They aren't the same FWIW.
Spread Option- Run oriented. WVU, Oregon
Spread- Pass oriented. Mizzou, TTU
Lets be clear here.

Presuming that you're talking about the spread-option it won't die until someone figures out how to defend it.

The spread option is a cheap trick to get a nobody team with an athletic QB to be stellar, the spread is just a playstation 2 style offense that seems to work.

I mean yeah it can be dominating with an athletic QB and a decent RB, but how is it a cheap trick?

I would think that if it works we should stop classifying it as a playstation 2 offense.

that is unstoppable, short of the aforementioned QB injury.

Too bad Pat White is a pussy or WVU would probably have a NC last year.

Elements of the spread are here to stay.
The one thing that will not go away is the ability to rush the football, you have to be able to do that in the SEC and I think even Urban Meyer realizes that now! Auburn painfully realizes it too.
The one thing the spread did was even the playing field for some of the teams that couldn't match up physically - like UK when Mumme came in.

So does the thread starter believe we should not accept Sheppard, because he is a running QB?

The IDEA of SPREADING the offense out and utilizing the ENTIRE Football Field will NEVER DIE.
It just makes too much sense.

I guess Sheppard should just prepare for WR right?

i would rather a pro style or spread the streches the field then a spread option

LSU does not play the spread very well. They struggled with Saban also.

They played it well against App State - much better than say, Michigan!

Jimbo didn't really run very much spread and he NEVER ran the option out of it.

I think he means its cheap in the sense that a spread option requires essentially a WR to play QB. Similiar to how Arkansas put McFadden at QB, its cheap but it works..

The spread is not going anywhere. Athletes in space is an idea that will be around for awhile! It's kinda like motion offense in basketball as far as putting your kids in position to be in one-on-one situations as much as possible in space.

We can take Sheppard but my point is that an offense, especially in the SEC, that endangers the qb as much as the spread option, invites danger. Even Florida is trying to limit Tebows running this year. Take Tebow off the field for Florida and their season is over, not to mention any SEC champ. or BCS birth.
