Florida's secondary is f'n awesome. I mean, one of the best in country sort of awesome. So we tried running the ball to avoid going into the teeth of their defense. And it was working well, as UF couldn't stop it. So why change what was working? Keep pounding the ball until they show they can stop it.

Also, playing with a lead, running the ball a ton made sense as it effectively shortened the game. There were something like only three drives per team in the second half. The clock was our friend.

Everyone is saying the offensive performance was "brilliant" and "excellent game plan". While I am not disagreeing, I am curious as to WHY this is. Did we not think we could throw downfield on their DB's? Did we not think our O-Line could pass-protect well enough?

Florida has a very good secondary, and it showed by us either having to make very tough catches in traffic, or occasionally getting a pass interference call. Mettenberger was not as sharp, as he missed a few open receivers at points during the game. We were running the ball very effectively against them, and our defense was not allowing their offense to put any points on the board.

In the first half, we had a long first drive that stalled when Mett overthrew an open receiver on 3rd down, then we scored touchdowns on two of our next three possessions, with the nonscore occuring when the ball slipped out of Mettenberger's hands after we had drove the ball down close to the UF redzone. So we were moving the ball, and we actually even tried a trick play at one point (I think that was first half, it not it was 3rd quarter). The third quarter wasn't great, but Florida couldn't score and we held an 11 point lead. Once they cut the lead to 8, we immediately marched right down the field to the UF redzone, but Mett was limping badly on that drive so we decided to keep the ball in Hill's hands and at worst kick a field goal, which we did, to regain the two score lead.

It's not so much that we went conservative, it's that Florida's offense piddles around and milks the clock. It makes their defense seem super duper, but in reality is just shrinks the possessions in a game. LSU really didn't punt that many times, we just didn't have the ball a whole lot. And if UF wants to just fiddle fart around on offense and milk the clock while we have a two score lead, why should we stop them?

Edit: great point by Houston Tiger, Landry was not 100%

it wasn't even that it was that conservative, we're just used to breaking 60 yarders this year in the run game and now that we didn't we think it was more conservative

For one thing, 3 of their DB's are 3 of the best in the country that will be playing on Sundays.

sometimes you have to take what the defense gives you.

Also why waste a down. If you can run 4-5 yards just keep doing it. An incomplete pass stops the clock and then forces you to pass again.

We gave up 240 yards to Florida - and it was less than 170 in the first 3 quarters. They needed 24 plays to get those last 70 yards, btw. They had run a total of 44 plays in the first 3 quarters.

So that's 68 offensive plays in 34 minutes TOP. They played slow and keeping it at that pace worked to our advantage. Did you ever feel Florida was in the game after the first play of the 2nd quarter?

Makes ole miss have the work on defending the run more now. Ole miss is now thinking do we have to defend LSU offense of last Year or do we defend the new offense. Hopefully the new wrinkle they showed against FLA will require OLE Miss uses the limited practice time this week on LSU new style of offense IE the FLA offense. This was a nice move on LSU part.

they really weren't. we were our own biggest enemy in the passing game. passing wasn't clicking, the running game and defense were, so...

Its hard to get the pass game going when the other team is winning the time of possession so handedly (which florida was, right to the end of end of the game). That was the reason for Mett and the WRs being a little off IMO. Which of coarse was part of UF's strategy.....they just didn't expect us to ram it down their throats Les miles style.

No I felt we had it tbh. They had once decent looking drive late but no big plays and it stalled.

les had a gameplan many thought in execution was brilliant.

many have trouble w/ lm's genius b/c of low iq and understanding how logic works. (there is no class for logic and spatial thinking.)

you criticize from hindsight, but would you please link us to your gameplan?
i'm sure you were just as brilliant before the game and you are not here to just criticize miles.

We obviously were having some issues throwing the ball against some of the best DB's in the country. 9-17 passing.

Florida needed turnovers if they wanted to catch up to us. Mett gifted them one, and we weren't going to give them another.

The OP asked the question in a very polite and respectful manner. Those of you whom insist on bashing him are out of line. Get off his back, you jerks. If your such experts, get off the rant and go get a job in the field!
