somebody explain OL strategy to me

Why do our tackles take a 5-7 step backdrop with out making contact with the defenders, basically making the "pocket" as quick as possible allowing for one good move for the DE or one over powering push to be in mett's face. I understand the idea of getting fast/good DE's around and past the qb...but it seems it creates more problems for our team
I'm watching other teams....Miss St. for example has there OT drop a step or two then engage and force the DE to physically push the OL back the remaining distance to the QB...causing more time for the QB to see the field.
Just flipping channels seems we are the only team forcing the pocket creation instead of making the other team work for it....just too big and experienced OL on our side to see repeated plays break down while they stand around with clean jerseys....on running plays they look like a totally different group.
I also think our backs need to follow Copeland through the hole longer before bouncing it out...the Auburn game was a prime example of this. Ware seemed to purposely not follow JC after the first long run.

You're not gonna get much insight here.

We do not have an OL coach, therefore it cannot be explained.

If they try to step up and reach a DE, the defender will blow past on the outside shoulder. It's simple. Unless it is a screen.....

I'm not saying step up when its pass protection, just saying why back up so quick and do half the DL's job for them, just step back a little slower and use their size to their advantage instead of having a 300 pounder try to block SEC caliber guys while virtually falling backwards....am I the only one that thinks it looks like our line is playing on ice at times...I'm not knocking our guys will or talent....it honestly looks like they are coached to do that...to manufacture the pocket creation...what's happening is it looks like they are trying too hard...like aiming a baseball or a freethrow...just simplify things and put a body on someone....the SEC DLs are good but you will never make me believe if we man up that our guys would consistently get pancaked.

Interesting. I've never noticed that but I'm not going to act like I know anything other than the very basic o line schemes.

maybe 'cuz they practice against one of the best defenses in the country? i have no idea.

quote:There's a scheme called vertical set that uses this method. The idea is to have DL lose leverage out of down position when lunging forward and not get blown up.
Why do our tackles take a 5-7 step backdrop
I've been offshore and haven'tseen any game film to watch OL to be sure that's it, though.
ETA: I tnink it's also helpful in seeing stunts, zone blitz etc before they gap you.

There is no strategy. Completely random.

Exactly
Not to mention it is a safer type of scheme when you are shuffling OL around like we have been

I do expect LSU to use the WR screen game more today with three step drops and designated throws
I don't expect to see a lot of five and seven step drops for mett today unless it is PA passing
