I think people are gonna be blown away by the quality of our pitching staff this year. We will prob have 4 legit starters (could be 5 if Godfrey gets his crap together), and we've got some major power coming in from juco who could fill that closer spot. Yeah, we are young but that can be turned into a strength. I'm optimistic, especially if these kids show discipline at the plate. Baseball is gonna be fun this year!

Quick...someone tell me how many SEC Championships Skip Bertman won? I'm sure you can hit up LSUSports.net or Wikipedia...But I have not ever-EVER-given a red rat's arse about the SEC Championships Skip Bertman won.

There's a reason we stopped not caring about SEC Championships and started acting like they were some big deal. The reason is that our coach and his philosophy have focused more on the regular season. Twice in the past few years, LSU has had all-time-dominant level regular season performances. Only to see us completely fizzle out in staggering displays of tightness and choking, unclutch performances from previously dominant teams.

In his tenure, he's one Hendry-fueled recruiting class away from being Raymond "Smoke" Laval, Jr. A guy who tore it up in the regular season, made it to Omaha, and then didn't do jack sh!t.

But his supporters-and some of the nouveau riche amongst the LSU Baseball fanbase-have succeeded in changing the narrative that while college baseball has changed, this must mean that no one can do what Skip Bertman did.

They ignore that Skip won 8 team Regionals in double-elimination format, with pitching staffs the same size as the ones we have now in far easier four and two team formats for sub-and-super regionals. They also forget that Skip was about 2 wins away from three straight Omaha trips from '99-'01 during the advent of the Super Regional Era.

They want to scream parity as if Skip never dealt with scholarship limitations, the draft and the like. They want you to think that Paul Mainieri is the best LSU can do. They also hinge their support as fans on the theory that College Baseball's changes create a binary situation that precludes dominance that Pauline is incapable of by saying that NO ONE is capable of dominance.

Not even the program who set the standard for dominance in the best conference in the sport whom now has the best facilities, best fan support, most money, and highest attendance for several decades straight.

They've achieved a fantastic lowering of expectations to fit the aptitude and limits of their favored coach's acumen.

It's sad. Telling, but sad.

You can say all that... and it may be valid and relevant.

But to me, all it comes down to is watching him make decisions that baffle everyone from the simple minded to people inside the program for years. He got all this credit for austin in 2009 and it's gone to his head. Even last year doing crap like completely changing up the lineup (while keeping in the two players struggling most) and starting Person, he thinks he can find that "hunch" again. At the same time, he blames the baseball seams, having to recruit against Vandy and TCU (wut?), players, and everything else under that sun.

@RodrigueAdv: Mainieri said he's pleased with how his team is performing in every facet of the game. But Tigers have hit better than he expected. #LSU

Trust me, his limitations and the edges of his coaching capability envelope are well known by others. But my entire point is that throwing alllll of the legion of issues with him from a personality and fit standpoint out, when it comes to his achievements, the only way folks are able to defend him is to reframe the entire debate.

The changes in the ball and the bats are somehow preventing him-and anyone else-from doing what he did. It's simply untrue. There's nothing holding Pauline Maineiri back from firing inept coaches like Javy Sanchez except for the very familial emotions that nepotism laws were created to avoid except for Pauline himself.

There's nothing preventing Pauline Maineiri from playing a 6th round draft pick like Tyler Moore every day except for Pauline himself.

There's nothing making Pauline Maineiri's dugout demeanor in-game situations seem akin to an Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferer whose just coming off of a three day fast of cheese and Immodium by taking some fast-acting Ex Lax, Stool Softeners and eating a pound of thick cut bacon except for Pauline Maineiri.

It's him. It's just that his fans have been allowed to reframe the entire discussion so that his limitations are now considered strengths, that our championship expectations are now misguided, and that anyone who feels or thinks the way that Skip Bertman relentlessly imputed into his teams about EXPECTING Championships is now a ridiculous, anachronistic, out-of-touch goofball negatiger.

It's amazing to see how they've done all that. But it's happened.

Good news...

Our pitching staff is going to carry us and that is usually good enough for a young team to overcome its early season troubles and growing pains. We might not be #1 at the end of the season but save this or bookmark this comment....

The 2016 LSU Baseball team will win 50 games, be a National Seed, and make it to Omaha.

I don't think people realize how difficult it is to win a championship.

Going into '15 the entire pitching staff was relatively unknown outside of Poche, Jared Foster was thought to be a low production guy, Chinea hadn't shown consisentcey on the collegiate level, Scivique was thought to be beaten out by a prep catcher weeks into the season and it all game together.

Granted Maineri tried to over coach in the CWS and gambled with Poche throwing game 1 but at the time it was the best matchup. Fault him now sure and he deserves it but if LSU squeaks out that game people would be proclaiming him a genius and ballsy.

Andy and Alan are two of the best assistant coaches who are continuing to recruit at an incredible rate for a "program that is declining" by rant standards. It puzzles me the lack of optimism shown toward a team that may have the best pitching staff in 2017 if LSU holds on to Poche to go along with Lange, Latz, Godrey, Norman, Bain, McKay.

If Poche doesn't commit the error, we are talking about how Mainieri's best move was recognizing that throwing the lefty against TCU was the best matchup. Sadly, he committed the error, then melted down. Still was the right decision. He was untouchable until he airmailed the throws.

It was the right decision. I defended it. The first two game are weighed equally so you set it up as best you can with that info. that still doesn't forgive him for what he did in game 3. He lost a lot of fans that day with his decisions and how he tried to defend them.

I would take Vanderbilt's coach (VanHorn?) and let you have Virginia's if you want to play funnzie ball.

Maybe some of you baseball followers can tell me how a mostly academic university like Vanderbilt without near the fan base like LSU can constantly get the best pitchers and players. And Vanderbilt's rise has happened on PM's watch.

What's funny is Virginia was the poster program for postseason choke jobs, but they luck into one title and now people want their coach. Jesus, people.

in your opinion, how did Pauline win a championship in 2009?
