Had they kept him playing we could have been subject to playing an ineligible player.

Depends on how long he would have played. Technically, he was not ineligible to play yet. The original article mentioned that bc he failed the class he would have been ineligible once final grades were posted. However, since he was about to become ineligible, PM decided to take a proactive approach and rule him out so Foster's replacement could get as much work in with the team before the post season started.

he appealed his grade and won the appeal.

This may be true

Most people are discussing the appeal thinking it was to the ncaa.

I thought the statements were that his grade was passing, just not high enough for his major. So I'm not really convinced he had to appeal a failing grade. But I do not know that for certain.

It's a fair question that deserves an answer.

You think we, the fans, deserve an answer? We don't. Foster does. We don't.

It did cost Foster his Senior Day recognition, though I don't know if that is considered a big deal to a player.

I don't care if they never give us a name of someone that's responsible for all this. But I hope that someone is held responsible and that they rectify the system so that this doesn't happen again in the future.

I'm surprised LSU hasn't taken more heat from this in the media. When Mainieri was first asked about the situation after Foster had been announced as eligible, he described the rule as being very obscure, and most of the media seems to just be parroting that narrative. But come on, we're not talking about some in game decision here. The rule may be "obscure" but it's not like you have to look hard to find it. It's in the rulebook, and it makes the situation very clear.

I'm sure lots of people are still of the opinion that this is all just Foster's fault for not doing well in his classes. I'm sure it really wouldn't have taken much effort for him to have gotten a C in whatever class it was caused this hangup, but at the end of the day, it's nobody but Foster's business how dedicated he is to his studies as long as he does the bare minimum to be eligible by the letter of the law. If you think most student athletes in the major sports are in school because they value education, you're kidding yourself. Jared Foster and most of the other guys on this team are here for one reason. To play baseball. Classes are nothing more than another hoop they are required to jump through in order stay on the baseball field. This is true at all schools, or at least any school with a major program that produces draft picks, be a state school like LSU or a prestigious private school like Vandy, USC, or Stanford.

If I were the head coach of any sport in college I would do my best to know the rules as well - assuming they don't. At least have a check in place to go through the compliance department first. Maybe they did? It's all good in my book! Everyone suffers a failure or three in life. It's just going to make the kid (Foster) a better person. He already looks better and more professional w the buzz cut.

I doubt you've had much compliance work in any industry from your frequent threads/posts on the subject. You also don't understand the role they are supposed to play especially when it comes to independence.

What does Independence have to do with knowing the rules of eligibility?

Eligibility is likely certified by someone in the Registrar's Office with a double check from compliance.

I mean, I like Foster as much as the next guy, but the posters in the thread are blowing this out of proportion. I read that the compliance department is "draconian and needs to be brought to hell." And also, a lot of people aren't even sure if that's the correct place to point the finger.

He's a good player in a sport that doesn't get huge national recognition, he was lazy in his classes, he managed to get through alright. Not a lot of harm done, and it's time to move on people. Man it's been a slow week.

Not to Jared, but devastating to his mom. You can imagine, the worst Mother's Day of her life.

LSU compliance shoots first and asks questions later. It is what it is. Its cost LSU when recruits come to visit. There are stories of recruits visiting with elderly family members that compliance wouldn't even allow a golf cart to go shuttle. They have the reputation of letting nothing slide, even if its open to interpretation they will say no first and then later clear it.

On the other hand, its their job to protect the program. What if Foster is ineligible, and games have to be vacated? One lady in compliance is said to be responsible for pulling Akiem Hicks off the team bus as it was about to leave on the Washington trip. He almost certainly would have logged playing time, and then you're into the next level of NCAA punishment.

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU second baseman Jared Foster has been declared academically ineligible for the remainder of the 2015 season, coach Paul Mainieri announced Friday.

I don't read crap, so I missed out on all the rumor and innuendo. I just copied this from the LSUSports.net website article. Did someone read that Compliance declared him ineligible? Or, was it just the coach declaring him ineligible?

I think they're getting a pass on this. For years, they have laid the screws to LSU Athletics. Except for-ironically-LSU Men's Basketball.

I wonder why that is? Hmmm. Can anyone remember a young Bo Bahnsen as a Ball Boy for Dale Brown? I sure can. So ironic that while other Athletic Programs at LSU in our AD are nailed to the wall routinely, the dirtiest sport at the collegiate level in terms of recruiting has been squeaky clean. Makes you wonder sometimes. Oh well I'm sure its probably just a conspiracy theory from a numbnut fan like so many others here on TD.

What kind of bullshite are you spewing? Easily the most Rantarded post I have seen in a few days. At least you got the part in bold right.

That deserves some scrutiny. As much as any they have hailed on any of the unfortunate programs here in Baton Rouge.
