Hanagriff mentioned this at the end of show last night. It basically goes something like this: following the '08 season (JL's int fest), Les decided he would never, ever live through that again. He knows he can win 80% of the games via D, ST's, and a vanilla O. Consequently, our O has been exceedingly conservative ever since. I agree with Hanagriff's explanation of what's transpired.

My thoughts:
a) Les was right to adjust course after '08.
b) We can win 80% of our games with this approach. But rarely, will we win more than 80%.
c) 80% won't win us many championships now (and after the Arnsparger years it's all about playing for championships).
d) For that reason, I think Les needs to get over it.

Get over what?

Really asking. I have no idea what you're talking about.

I wish someone had been more conservative when we were throwing all the interceptions in Oxford last year.

this statement confuses me. Arnsparger was a damn good coach, but sucked in bowl games. when the season was done, so was he.

This is what I'm confused with as well.

Correct, Bill never won a bowl game. Before him, "success" was beating our rivals (Tulane, OM) and getting a good bowl game. What Arnsparger did was emphasize winning championships. That was new in the mid-80's. We won the SEC in '86 (for the first time since '70). And although he had left, we won another in '88.

That part of the past aside, do you think we can win championships if we only win 80% of our games?

Educate yourself. LSU passed the football more than any other team in the country in 2013.

We were #108 in attempts and #41 in yds last year.

I'm being respectful when I say this, not trying to be a jerk but I'll take two 1000+ yard WRs, a 1000+ yard RB and a 3000+ yard QB every year if that's what you think "being conservative" is.

We also led the country in 3rd down conversions last season.

I wouldn't say last years offense was conservative. In fact, it was very productive.

Hanagriff's assertion is that Les takes a (some would say ultra-) conservative approach to O.

The fact that some throw out last year as a counter argument kind of makes the case. Is it only when we have a talented 5th yr QB that our O will show proficiency? Five seasons have come and gone since '08 of which only one can we say our O was good.

I wouldn't say "ultra" but it is conservative, in certain games, no argument there. Like last night's.

But it's not conservative in every game.

Mett was a starter for last year and 2012. The transformation in playing he made from 2012 to 2013 was incredible. He really looked like a completely different player, in a good way.

If you have a less than stellar OC, you'll more than likely get less than stellar results, which is what you had in 2008.

The necessary changes were made and I'm glad they were made. Did I get annoyed sometimes at how we looked back in 2008? Sure.

Do I get annoyed now with how we look? Sometimes but I feel a whole lot better knowing there's a proven OC with LSU now.

That offense put up more points than the two that followed it. The problem in 2008 was interceptions and bad defense. Interceptions in 2008 led to poor defensive results that year, as well as the slowed down offense in 2009 and 2010.

Take away all the picks, especially the pick 6s, and 2008's offense was "okay." It scored more points than the 2005 and 2012 teams as well.

Three things happen when the play is a pass, one is good and two are bad.
