PSU this year defensively would not be ranked 2nd if they played a SEC schedule.

1.)

2.) Ok? Even if it was a valid point, he'd have the best athletes in the country to build on that defense.

3.) Let's compare PSU and Bama's defensive performance against OSU:

PSU - 293 yards
* PSU held Ohio State to 17 points in regulation with 14 coming off turnovers in their own territory.

*Ohio State gained just 293 yards and 74 passing yards despite 2 overtimes.

*Penn State held OSU to 80 yards in the 2nd half, 21 yards in the 4th quarter, and generated 2 turnovers.Furthermore, the Penn State defense outscored the OSU offense in the 2nd half, 7-0

Bama - 537 yards
Now, let us look at how Bama handled Ohio State (here's a hint, they lose based on the 1st half alone):
*537 yards, 256 passing, 281 rushing with TD drives of 71, 77, 75, and 95.

He would have been a home run hire

This would have been a home run hire.

Be assured PSU did what was necessary to keep Bob Shoop and it was substantial. We're in a different age at PSU, one of marketplace realism.

Penn St matched LSU's offer. So we made Shoop a millionaire!

Aren't you the guy who said Shoop's poor head coaching record reflected poorly on his recruiting and then proceeded to bring up a coach who's a good recruiter with a head coaching record nearly as bad in Coach O? (Derailing your own argument)

Please tell me who you propose

there are no more shutdown defenses...just aren't. an pretty average defense with an innovative offense is where it's at these days. that leaves lsu out.

Coordinators period, don't recruit as much as position coaches. You have your few like Smarf, Venables, now Muschamp again, but not really much else. Offensive coordinators who are the QB coach, usually pick their QBs though.

Chavis' secret affair hurt us. We could have made a run at Muschamp or Venables before he signed his extension. We may have grabbed a dline recruit. It seems intentional that it was under the radar to try to bring down a divisional opponent. Dirty looking shite from Chavis. I don't know the truth, but it looks bad.

Wouldn't really say it was a secret affair.

LSU gave all the assistants a contract extension in early December. Everyone signed but Chavis.

Shortly after that, it becomes public that TAMU was courting John Chavis and he didn't sign the extension. And I'm sure Alleva, Les, etc knew tbat Chavis didn't sign the extension and TAMU was going after him.

And we don't know exactly why Chavis didn't sign the extension, but the popular rumors sound like he had issues with the contract (wanted a few $100k more and didn't want to be tethered to Les). He probably thought "hey I just had the #1 D in the SEC and what I'm asking for is just a little raise and don't want my job security to be dependent on Les. They'll give it to me."

Alleva doesn't budge. Chavis goes to TAMU.

Not really a secret affair. We knew that Chavis didn't sign the extension, that TAMU was after him, and that he had a few issues with the offer. The writing was on the wall that if we didn't give him the slight bump is pay and get rid of the "Les Miles clause" he had the option to leave and go somehwere willing to give him what he wanted. And Alleva didn't budge, so Chavis left.

The timeline makes it look like something dirty and intentional, but you're talking about John Chavis who has been all about loyalty during his coaching career, 2 schools in like 20 year. I'm sure Chavis thought we would redo his contract and find a middle ground with the $$$ and clause and he would sign an extension with us when Muschamp was hired by Auburn and all that. But that never happened.

You do realize that Shoop was the best DC available and that whoever we hire will be a downgrade from Chavis?

Assuming you meant DC...

Can you tell me what experience our OC had recruiting the South before he was hired?
Recruiting in the south was the only concern of me my friends when this guy from Mich St. became our head coach over a decade ago. We were wrong.

It's reported he talked to Sumlin before our game and went back to A&M a few days after to meet him. That was before anyone signed extensions.

I agree that LSU had some time, but it seems they spent most of that time renegotiating with Chavis, but he knew he was leaving.

It isn't like he was going to be replacing a top recruiter. Chavis recruited through production. Shoop has been as productive as Chavis.

Unfortunately for him, that was fool's gold, because his defense was average to poor.

his defense shut out ohio state in the 2nd half of their game and took them to OT

ohio state scored 42 on alabama with a 3rd string QB

You're an idiot. He's had 4 years in a row of top 25 ranked defenses at 2 different schools including the SEC.

When are you frick tards going to learn?

Les and Alleva have completely botched this hire.

Sure he had a great defense this year with the schedule they played. PSU this year defensively would not be ranked 2nd if they played a SEC schedule

LSU had 57th ranked schedule.

PSU had 68th ranked schedule.

He had top 20 defenses annually at VANDERBILT in the SEC. This was a home run prospect. You are an absolute idiot.
