Was thinking the same the other day. Crazy that Shaq only has one MVP.
Its kinda difficult to win the MVP when you get pulled for the last 3 minutes of any close game because you are so God Awful from the free throw line. Of course that is unless the league agrees to look the other way when you step clear past it for the better part of a season.
Sorry, Shaq was great and all, but there was some heavy engineering in his playoff games against Portland and Sacramento over the years.

It's called Most VALUABLE Player not Most OUTSTANDING Player.

Which might be a good point if he ever got pulled from games in his prime.

Career 53% free throw shooter. His being out there still made him a liability.
The other problem Shaq always had is a lack of contemporaries. By the time he was considered completely dominant (as defined by being first team All-NBA), he was competing against Ben Wallace, an aging David Robinson, Mutombo, and Jermaine O'Neil.
Wallace is a great story but one dimensional (and beat Shaq in a Finals match up), Mutombo was the definition of one dimensional and never a great match up for Shaq, Robinson was legit, and I was shocked to see how often Jermaine was All-NBA.
I think who you play against has some impact on how "great" a player is considered. . .particularly someone with so many physical gifts.
Part of Jordan's greatness is that he can list Ewing, Drexler, Stockton, Malone, Barkley, and Magic as contemporaries that he beat on his way to championships.
Jason Collins/Kenyon Martin, Mutombo, and Rik Smits don't evoke as much awe.

Fair, but look at Shaq's Finals stats. He could be playing against high school centers and it'd still be impressive. Nothing he can do about the East representatives in the Finals. As someone said, Shaq was almost never pulled from a game late when he was in his prime.

It would be coaching malpractice to pull Shaq from a close game during his prime.

thank you, Professor X

If I were Professor X, I would have (prime) Shaq, Justin Tuck, Laron Landry, and Patrick Willis do my bidding. Try and stop them.

it is sort of a NBA tradition to give the MVP to the best player story of the year instead of the best player in the league
at least that is what it looks like when you MJ had so few MVPs and clearly was the best player in basketball for a decade
Exactly, MJ should have won it every year he played a full year from 88'-he retired. I remember when they gave it to Malone, MJ was pissed.

I would believe that was a given. I was referring to his Chicago Career.

He would get beat up and got no protection when he was playing defense. A lot like what happened during his NBA career. Geiger breaks his hand, he is called for traveling. It is tough being a mutant, they penalize you.
God's honest truth. Thing is, with his size it doesn't matter how hard they hit you because you're barely moving. So to the ref it doesn't look like much. To the contrary, Iverson got to the line so much in part because he was so little, and going fearlessly against guys so big, he'd end up sprawled out on the floor half the time. The kind of contact that would've sent Iverson to the second row, Shaq would've barely noticed.
