I was never in the band, but seem to recall hearing "somewhere over the rainbow" one too many times in years past.

ETA - Way long ago. Nothing to do with Roy King or about his quality.

I was in the band from 1972-75. The director was Bill Swor. We did halftime shows with music current to that time-Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Chicago, Chase, as well as some big band sounds of the 40s and 50s. Current music in the 1970s was much different from current music today.

Exactly. I think younger folks expect to hear Beyonce or some sort of Hip Hop booty music halftime show. Go to a Southern game if you want all that blasting out of tune noise and headache. Not every popular radio jam can be transferred onto the field.

Personally, I always thought STTDB was utterly tasteless. I am willing to bet the lovers of that chant do not like Roy King.

Amen on everything you said, brother! I used to think it took talent to play music because I played with some very talented musicians in Tiger Band. I guess musical talent is not a prerequisite for today's music.

You sound old and close-minded as shite. Yes, there is a lot of crappy music out today, but let's not act like there wasn't in your day too, grandpa.

Yeah, sonny boy, there was bad music. It was called disco, country, and punk. Rap was the natural progression down the path to the garbage that exists now.

i would be very interested to see a comparison between a Wicks halftime (2009 or earlier) and a Roy halftime (2011-2015). I'll see if I can find videos, when I've got time to do it and am not on my cell phone.

I have firsthand experience with both Wickes (actually Moorhouse) and Roy shows. You'll notice a pattern of "easier" (i.e. "boring") shows when there was only a week between home games...

This will not change.

Interesting read.
It is an interesting read. However, it has hallmarks of being slanted. (not to mention trumped up).

Just one obvious example regarding the missing cash from the Administrative Coordinator's desk: "She offered no explanation for what happened to the remaining money."

OK, so say you are asked, 'Do you know what happened to the remaining money?' and you answer, 'No. I don't know what happened to the remaining money' (presumably because you weren't actually present to see what happened).

In this case, where you have answered absolutely truthfully, you also have technically offered "no explanation".

And how could you? If you were actually present when what ever happened to the "remaining money", you would be compelled to testify eye-witness evidence; anything else would be speculative hear-say.

Throwing the "offered no explanation" phraseology into a report such as this with no underlying meaning is, I think, meant to confer some kind of guilt upon the subject by inference -and that's slanted.

Slanted can = malicious intent. And where malicious intent resides, so does endangerment of truth.

I also thought the bit about Syracuse was odd. If someone is willing to donate that much money, why was the SOM fighting so hard to keep Roy from going? He's the band director, why can't he go on a trip with them? Makes me thing they didn't want him getting money from her

There are many inconsistencies and dodges in this audit report.

Another example:

LSU has, throughout the entirety of this episode, prior to Roy King's petition, and by numerous comments of many of those named as defendants in the petition, claimed that none of this has been a 'money grab' on the part of anyone involved in the Administration of CMDA (College of Dramatic Arts and Music), or any other LSU Administration, for that matter. No sir-ee.

And yet, the final recommendation of the auditor includes this admission:

1. The College of Music and Dramatic Arts management should assume full responsibility for the oversight, distribution, and management of LSU Athletic Band Scholarship funds, within established guidelines, with annual reports being provided to the Athletics Department to ensure compliance with NCAA rules and to otherwise provide proper accountability.

(How they dreamed up the idea to hide behind the skirts of the NCAA, I'll never know. )

But while (if) you're thinking about all that, think bout this:

Why in God's Creation is this report dated May 2? Are they actually saying they proceeded to resolution (firing Roy King in April) a priori and before their own audit information was even formally presented?

This carries the classic stench of kangaroo court proceedings by LSU Adminnistration, at worst, or just plain incompetence, at best -probably both IMO.

State money can't be used for fundraising activities. So that's why he was denied state travel allowance.

I don't have a problem with this, but my problem is that they told him to secure travel funding elsewhere, which he did, and now they use as one of the reasons to fire him that he was disobedient by going in the first place?

Oh I get it. I'm just making the observation that both claims are exaggerated.

It is an internal audit report conducted and controlled by the people being sued after they fired King. That seems real reliable.

yeah I don't get it. Someone was trying to give LSU 500k and him going there to secure it is a reason they state for firing him. But that money was for the golden girls so I feel like that may have been part of the reason they were opposed to it unless they could have control over it.

Kudos to Knight of Old for pointing out the heart of the matter. (You beat me to it. )

All you have to do is read that statement, and then realize that the entire document is designed to get you to that point. It was probably the first sentence written or, at least, the statement that was in the "investigators'" minds as they crafted the document.

About the missing money....as stated in Roy's suit, he (and Linda, the administrative assistant) have handled hundreds of thousands of dollars in travel money over the years with never a dime unaccounted for. Does it strike anyone else as a bit odd (and perversely convenient) that EXACTLY at the same time they are both being investigated by the administration (with the clear goal that they both be fired), some money ends up missing out of Linda's desk? Just think about that one for awhile....
