Ronnie Feist transfer - bad for LB depth?

Let me start by saying that I know Feist switched to FB this season. However, I had always assumed he would switch back to LB and provide some added depth there (maybe even start) as we switch to the 3-4.

What does his transfer mean for our LB depth? Do we even have the personnel to play a 3-4 this year? Will we move some DEs to OLB (e.g., Bower, Teuhema) and OLBs to MLB (e.g., Riley)? Will we rely on incoming freshmen? We will start incoming freshmen?

Or do we just say screw it and stick with the 4-3 this year with Beckwith-Riley-Alexander as the starting trio?

As you could have guessed, I disagree with you. We are extremely thin at LB unless we move some guys around.

No, inconsequential for LB depth. Feist moved to FB last year.

Him leaving is a sign that he wasn't going to play much. That should tell you everything.

Aranda is doing that now, Corey Thompson is moving there in the spring, Devin Voorhies moved last year.

On the surface I would say YES, of course it impacts depth at an already thin position.

But as you have already questioned, all bets are off this season already because Aranda will be the game changer with scheme and all players (new and old) are open for serious revaluation.

You have numbers but thin in experience. In passing downs/spread offenses, you probably will only have two traditional linebackers on the field. KB might even be at rush end with Adams and one other at linebacker.
KB with either Alexander/CT/Riley/voorhies/divinity or fowler. I think someone will emerge

yes to all

Teuhema, Bower, Key can all play rush ends in 3-4

Voorhies and Thompson are moving to LBer as well

and we just signed 3 (possibly 4) highly rated LB this class

Possible, but also potentially short-sighted. Although unfathomable to most, who knows what other personal reasons RF may have for leaving.

Purely as an example, it's not too farfetched to ponder he may want a career in coaching football one day and Frank said "Come join me for a year then l'll give you a GA position and help teach you the ropes."

Unless you know him personally it's a stretch for you to proclaim the absolute reason for him leaving.

Although we will have few guys who have contributed at LB, we have some nice fits for Aranda's system in Donnie Alexander and Voorhies to go along with Beckwith and Riley who should be on the field a lot. Fowler and Divinity will play. White could play LB this year, if he ends up there.

we have divinity and fowler, and white may move to LB, who is the possible 4th?

who knows.
yes.
prob will move DEs to OLB if running a 3-4, and I'd look to Key first if so.
almost definite that we'll play a few freshmen, if for no other reason than to get em experience for 17.
if a freshman is worthy of starting, sure.

as has been noted, Dave* will adapt the defense to his personnel. there was an article about him just before he left Wisconsin where Barry Alvarez said you can't necessarily peg Dave's scheme as being one thing, 3-4 or 4-3 or whatever. just know that he's gonna field a sound, nasty bunch. #InDaveWeTrust

* we're cool like that

For whatever reasons Feist could not get on the field for 3 years at LSU despite less than desired depth at LB. It is difficult to imagine that would have changed going forward. His departure may negatively impact LSU's depth, but more importantly transferring might give him the opportunity to play, although against lesser competition than the SEC.

Thornton will play LB

White is the possible 4th

and Andre Anthony is a perfect rush end for the 3-4

He was in the program for four years. He only saw the field as a FB for a few plays. He got his degree. Let him finish his eligibility by playing and having fun at UTSA.

The question is, is it bad for linebacker depth. One poster pointed out that he was not even playing at linebacker anymore, had been moved to fullback, and that got two downvotes lol.
Hilarious that common sense is downvoted
