Reynolds pitched his heart out 3 solid innings!! Clearly he got tired should have put Bush in before the second walk!!

Like PM said, he got greedy.

What surprised me was no one was seemingly warming up knowing RR had met the hoped for three innings

RR had a career night and it's a shame he wasn't pulled once he lost control. Young man had a career night on the biggest stage in college baseball.

RR

And let's not forget nick bush having a career night himself. Johnny pitched the game of his life last night.

if this is the biggest coaching miscue, I'm ok with that.

but, the biggest misstep last night was Watson's in CF. shite like that, too, happens though.

That is the head-scratcher and it can't happen tonight. If your P just gave you what you hoped for, you have another arm up ready to go. At worse, after the 2d BB, should have necessitated a pitching change. Poor guy got hung out there a bit with nothing left in the tank.

Poched needs a FSU like performance tonight, hammer down for 7 or more IP (his last game) and hand the ball to Hess. Tigers W 6-3!

I wouldn't call it greed. I'd say he stayed committed to irrational feelings. Baseball still clings to "feel" so much more than any other sport. Even the players enable this mentality with the various "rally" symbol du jour.

I want to see baseball evolve, particularly below the major league level, where coaching and playing becomes more rational and reasoned and less astrological.

You have to go off of feel with baseball. That explains Slaughter's homerun. You gotta be able to recognize and play the hot hand.

Bush was up after the first out (the liner to Slaughter where RR covered the bag)... Probably left him out there one batter too long

Someone should have been warming up from the 2nr inning on. Reynolds was effectively erratic and was rarely hitting his spots.

Paul has to have someone ready earlier, because 9 up, 9 down was a mirage. That being said, if you're Reynolds, you simply cannot walk 3 straight in only the 4th inning. Even if it's belt high fastballs, you have to throw strikes.

Classic gambler's fallacy. The "hot hand" is merely an observation of a statistical trend. It has no predictive value in any sport.

Feel only works until it doesn't. How can you explain that feel works with that home run while ignoring how often it doesn't (leaving Reynolds in without anyone in the bullpen warming up)? Maineri felt that too, didn't he?

It's hard to say he did his job with the way the game ended. Yea he was put into a tough spot. But he was also responsible for walks that directly led to runs that beat us in a 1 run game

I asked this in another thread.
What is the story on Bush, was he or was he not warming up when the 4th started? if not when did he warm up?
This is key.
I see different answers in 2 different threads.

Certainly the best coaches in baseball play the best 3D chess - but, unlike the board game, it's still subject to human factors - that being falling short and exceeding expectations in unique situations. No way PM should've left RR for 3 straight walks, but to say he didn't deserve to come out and pitch in the 4th is pure speculation. Our bullpen needed 4-5 decent innings based on recent past performances. So I'm sure this weighed heavily on PMs decision to try to stretch it another inning or two. If our pen had shown signs of being reliable, it would've been a different call. Game 2 and possibly 3 require some rested arms as well.

Reynolds did what we had hoped for 3 innings but lets not also forgot 2 of 9 outs came from pap throwing down. Defensively we were excellent and made the plays needed. We were fortunate to get through that 3rd clean.
