I completely expect Neal to be one starter at d-end (and I expect him to be our best overall d-lineman this coming season). The other side is not so clear to me. All my instincts tell me it is going to be Clark (just too much upside to keep away), but Bower's experience has to be considered.

The d-tackles are pretty much set - except for who joins QT on the 2nd team.

++++++++=

I am not saying that LSU fans can expect 2011 type of dominance on the d-line (Logan, Brockers, Montgomery, and Mingo made a damn good foursome). But I absolutely expect better play than most other recent seasons.

#93 M.J. Patterson could be a breakout player at DE, and I also think true freshman #94 Ike Washington could surprise some people this year

Neither Bain nor Herron will drop any weight. The defense we will transition to this year is called a 4-3 under. From the naked eye it looks like a 3-4 but it's not. It still has 4 d-lineman and 3 linebackers. The difference is the strongside d-end (usually a very athletic D-tackle) plays over the tackle instead of the tightend. You walk the outside backer up to the line of scrimmage thus giving you the look of 3-4. The weakside d-end is smaller, and usually your pass rush d-end. The Mike and will linebackers are stacked to give you that 3-4 look. This is why players like Bain, Herron, and even Godchaux are rumored to move permanently to DE. Not you typical pass rush D-ends

Or maybe no news means he's nowhere to be found. Otherwise we would hear something

That would be true under Chavis' scheme. Steele likes a bigger DE like when Tyson Jackson was here and a smaller DE on the other side.

May I suggest 'Gilmore Guys' if you need a name for the fan club... I don't know, just has a ring to it.

Bain had three sacks in the Spring Game and was tearing it up in the spring. I had same thoughts till I saw him play there. I think some of this effectiveness is scheme.

BTW Tyson Jackson played at 295 or better at DE...

Bain is still sloppy and needs to shed the bad weight. He needs to be able to contain the edge. Around 285 or 290 would be good for him. He won't start anyway though. Our starters at DE will both be 250 and our DTs will be 290-295. Bain can only be effective as a DE in the under/over formations where he'll have the Sam standing next to him. Can't play Under all game and expect to win.

ETA: Neither Herron or Godchaux have been rumored to be playing DE. Herron would be the best candidate though as he played around 250 in HS. Godchaux in a monster in the middle and will not be moving unless Q or Valentine takes huge leaps ahead. Bower, Teuhema, and Key are all going to be playing Leo whil Lewis, Bain, and Clark will be SDE.

DT has fallen off the mark the last three years or so. Would like to dominate at that position again.
