LSU offense vs. Mississippi State defense
Slight Advantage Mississippi State

quote:

He was able to keep his offense pretty basic in the Tigers’ first two contests, but against a tough front seven like Mississippi State’s, we expect to see several new wrinkles. That, and the fact that Danny Etling has played like the veteran he is – 71 completion percentage, 398 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions — gives LSU’s offense much more than a fighting chance in this matchup, but since this game is on the road against a really stout defense, we’ll give an ever-so-slight nod to Mississippi State here.

LSU defense vs. Mississippi State offense
Advantage LSU

quote:

With the way LSU has played defense in its first two games, I’m not sure there’s an offense in the country that would be favored against this “greedy” unit. As we’ve stated this week, LSU’s defense ranks nationally in rushing (first), total defense (fifth), scoring (sixth) and third down conversions (14th). and then you add a returning potential top-five pick in next year’s NFL draft (Arden Key), LSU’s defense is as good as anyone’s in the country.

Jake caught up with Mississippi State beat writer Brett Hudson of the Columbus Dispatch, who said Fitzgerald has not yet made the “elite” throws in tight windows this season. If he hasn’t yet, I wouldn’t bet on him doing so against “DBU” and with edge rushers Arden Key and K’Lavon Chaisson bringing the pressure.

Special Teams
Tossup

quote:

LSU is now 3-of-6 on the season in field goals Mississippi State has only made two of its four attempted field goals.

it hasn’t been all bad on LSU special teams. The kick return coverage has been fairly good, and D.J. Chark had a beautiful TD punt return against Chattanooga and would have had another if not for a block in the back The Tigers and Bulldogs are pretty much equal in every other area of special teams with Mississippi State’s Logan Cooke averaging six more yards per punt (45.7) than LSU’s Josh Growden.

In what’s likely to be a very competitive game on the road, special teams is something to keep a close eye on.

Intangibles
Slight advantage LSU

quote:

LSU has traditionally owned Mississippi State, as the Tigers have won 17 of their last 18 games against the Bulldogs.

Veteran quarterback Danny Etling, who has experience in hostile environments from last season, will be leading a Matt Canada offense that’s still a big mystery to opponents. Mississippi State fans will show up with their cowbells ready to throw the Tigers off of their game, but with history and the true debut of Canada’s unorthodox offense on LSU’s side, the Tigers have the edge here.

There was more in his comparisons that were covered in yesterday's and today's reports.

And not one mention of Guice when talking about LSU's offense. It's like people forgot he exists.

Defenses have keyed on LSU's running game for 10 years and only a handful of teams (mostly Alabama teams) have been able to slow it down.

The website is named "Dandy Don's LSU Sporting News". I don't care who is typing the words.

I seriously don't understand the overconfidence coming out right now about this game. State thoroughly dominated inferior competition in their first two games. Just like us.

You know what you're getting with a Mullen offense. Their QB hasn't been great. LSU is otherworldly good on defense and might be better this week with Key back and maybe some upperclassmen with chips on their shoulders that have been passed up by some talented froshs.

But States defense is very very talented. And what do we know about Canada's offense so far? We've seen pretty vanilla takes through two games, partly because of overmatched competition and a BYU team that decided to give 6ypc because they wanted to keep everything in front of them.

Look LSU is by far the more talented team and should win this game handily. But I haven't seen anything yet to indicate this should be a blowout game. I'll be excited as hell if it is. But we're not in a position yet to be going into the SEC schedule expecting the hang 40+ points on every team we play. Not yet.

Scott Long gave this website to his father, Don Long, about twenty years ago. He has left the name as it was in honor of his father. If you read it often you know Scott is a very honorable guy and really misses his dad. It's just a tribute. Daily readers know Don passed away and Scott writes everything except for contributors when Scott is out. Always been a great daily read. Thanks Scott!

I'm not fighting. Just trying to make a comment on why the name is what it is. Also, I do contribute since I read it daily. It's a very good website with lots of LSU information and all things Louisiana.

Msu front 7 is solid. Where we can dominate is our WR vs their Dbs. As long as Etling comes through and the oline blocks for him he should be able to throw all over that Secondary. I do think its closer than many Lsu fans will expect. It'll come down to which fg kicker steps up.
