Stud followed the game plan and it's what most thought it would be. Oregon lost a lot of it's front seven and we all thought LSU's offensive line could dominate. You have to run the football over and over in the first half to dominate in the second half the way they did. Give him a "A".

B+ You could clearly see that the coaches knew that Oregon couldn't hang going toe to toe with the Tigers for the entire game. LSU is way too physical for the ducks. I especially loved the play action bomb to Beckham that was called back on a bullshite flag. I look forward to seeing more of agressive calls like that.

He gets massive points from me for not running the option.

Not really but they could have ran four wide and and a delay or dive with Ford to spread them out. They could have ran some misdirection cut back. Instead, it was the same toss or dive everytime. I don't even think they ran any off tackle except when Ford bounced it outside.
So what you are saying is that they could have run plays other than those that worked? Ok

Finally someone that understands.

More than the play-calling itself was the change of pace no huddle attack in the 3rd quarter that I think changed the game for LSU. It took Oregon by surprise and kept them on the their heels. A little dose of their own medicine, so to speak.

Look, I'm glad we won but the play calling wasn't all world buddy
Let me guess. You want lots and lots of downfield passes? You want triple reverse lateral passes? You want playground stuff?
The coaching staff totally figured out the Oregon defense and used the weapons and talents on hand to dominate them. Smart planning and play calling isn't a matter of elaborate trick plays. It is using the assets you have to your best advantage. The play calling reflected that. I am truly sorry that LSU disappointed you. I'm sorry that you want LSU to be TCU, but it won't happen under Miles. So be prepared for lots of disappointments
exactly. They looked at the Auburn game, realized we had a nice size advantage, and went to work on wearing them down and pushing them around. You have a new qb who needs to develop his timing with the 1's, so they didn't put it all on him at first, let the game develop and come to him, then started giving him passing plays that were more aggressive as the game continued. There was nothing cute about the playcalling, no overthinking, no genius crap. Took their advantages and made use of them while protecting the weaknesses.

who knows what the gameplan was going in?
granted, the play calling was boring, vanilla, & we just ran between the tackles all night (it worked), but Lee didnt exactly play well enough to open up the book
he spent the first half throwing behind the receivers, doesnt exactly inspire confidence in a 2nd half passing attack

Bland and vanilla... hardly sexy. Old school smash mouth football dominating the line of scrimmage. Would have seen us go down field a couple of more times... but solid B for me.

I think it was tailored for the players on the field. It was conservative at QB to get JL some confidence, while it took advantage of our ability to pound the ball right at them. He threw in play action and screens periodically to keep them honest, and we threw it up the field, too.
If we don't drop 4 long passes, and if we don't get a BS hold on the play to OBJ, we wouldn't have this conversation.
I thought the offense was solid. It was such a relief to see the us trying to establish the passing game, and putting up 40 points in a game.

The field position did help but last year turnovers were resulting in FG's, last night those turnovers were TD's, thats a big improvement.

Run - Power right, Power left, Toss Right, Toss Left, QB sneak.
Pass - Swing pass to RB, TE over the middle, TE seam route, Fade Route, Sideline Deep Ball.
That was pretty much the offense from what I remember.

Les called a great game last night.

The offense did exactly what it needed to do last night. They won T.O.P. against Oregon. How often did this happen last year? Unlike last year, the OFFENSE helped out the defense by eliminating 3 and outs EVERY drive. I'll take this kind of win 14 times this year, if necessary. We are a defensive minded team with an unbelievable 2 deep. Let's let our defense win as many games for us this year as we can.

THIS.....and there was no need to reveal too much of the passing game or trick plays to allow future opponents to prepare for. Winning games in the games in the 4th quarter is often predicated by how you set up your opponent in the first 3 quarters. Winning BIG games in November is often about how you set that opponent up by not giving your opponent the opportunity to prepare for wrinkles you revealed in September and October.

Agree. If you are JC, how in the heck do you evaluate who is first team and who is second team? I mean there is absolutely no drop off between any of them.
Posted on 9/4/11 at 9:58 am to Antonio Moss
Exactly. When you have a huge o-line, and studs like Ware and Ford to pound the ball down the throat of opposing teams, there's no need for a lot of unnecessary bullshite. Just do what you do best.
Hanging 40 pts. on the number three team in the nation ain't too shabby.

I'm not worried about the play-calling. We know Les is capable of crazy trick plays. I'm sure we'll see more of the Ware-throwing type plays from last year.
I think there is want to run the trick plays, and the team will run them when ready.

NO SHORT SIDE OPTION!
I did see a team run a short side option yesterday and they gained 7 or 8 yds with it.
The offense looked 100% better, I don't know if this was due to minus JJ or GC.

Hard to believe that only 1 poster mentioned this. It turned the game around. After that, the Ore defense was spent.
As for overall grade -- a B. And that's grading on a curve since they only had a week or so to game plan for Lee. You can run the ball and still mix up the plays more. We did that in the second half (after running left the whole first half) with some counters to the right with Ford.
If Lee is the starter, we need to run plays that take advantage of his strength -- quick throws. Slants, wide-out screens, 3 step drop throws, and screen passes (because we all know that Lee can throw moving backwards).
