I'm 32 and can't remember a spring game ever being competitive. As a kid, I guess I'd assume they were competitive when I'd listen to them on the radio with my dad while we grilled out.

For the older fans, did spring games used to be more competitive? Did they ever tackle or hit the QB? What were they like in the 80's?

They little more than practices. I remember at the end of each half the offense would get a series at the other teams 20. QBs weren't touched. Punts were far caught if fielded at all.

I.e. They were boring but they accomplished one thing; letting the team play in front of real fans.

In the early 90's it was. The winning team would eat steak after the game, while the losing team got sandwiches or something irrelevant like that.

Cholly Mac would let BR sports writers coach the teams.

It is embarrassing to only see 21,000 when the other SEC schools are putting 60,000 plus in the seats. Why is this? Festival season in Louisiana?

Wasn't it red beans & rice? So who's the loser?

Spring football is nothing more than an off-season fix for the fans.

I think it is more embarrassing that people show up for a shitty, contrived event that is less interesting than an actual practice. That might just be me, though.

I was at the Gump Spring Game, went for a quarter before drinking. They had a lot of hill people there.

The spring football game has always been a fun event to celebrate the end of the year. Coach Mac's letting sport reporter's call plays and the steak-beans bet was all for fun. And celebrate that its over with little or no injury's. Rest and get ready for the hot grind of weights and summer camp.

The format is boring and like everything else recently the administration doesn't care. If they did they would hold it over a baseball weekend and make it attractive for us out of town fans.

Stovall never had a Spring Game of any sorts.Arnsparger had one in 1984 that was an offense vs defense one where the defense got points for stops, fumbles, interceptions, etc.

Who cares?

We got stuff to do in Louisiana in April.

Nobody gives a shite about some useless scrimmage.

We'll be there when it matters in the Fall.
