Question about LSU play calling.

If opposing teams are going to put 8,9, and sometimes 10 in the box, then why wouldn't we run a 3 wide receiver with a single back set. You could still run the ball while making the other team have to spread out on D.

We do that sometimes but we are at our absolute best when the FB is leading Fournette.

We are getting better each week at all of it. The team is progressing and will be peaking when they need too.

FB and TE block better than WR.

Part of it is LSU does not let alignment dictate their run game. They have a lot of RAC play calls because they are trying to establish some things out of their I sets.
The second thing is that Les has identified an advantage against stacked boxes with Gordon and JDM. When those guys execute at the point of attack, Fournette has to win an individual matchup against one guy to score a long touchdown. Gordon/Jeter and JDM have executed, Fournette has done his part. The 7 or 8 man box (no one brings 10 very rarely do we get 9 by alignment) has produced a lot of highlight reel touchdowns for #7.

10 in the box? That doesn't happen

Well Gordon and jeter in a two TE set our oline and LF has proven tough to beat. I do think we see more of the set and we should still have a big advantage. Just think though when Gordon gets healthier and jeter in there with Dupree n Dural out wide it's a huge disadvantage except for maybe bama n ole miss who may can match the physicality. And that's a big If. Cfb today even talked about 8 man fronts not wkin so defenses may. Need to go straight m2m with no deep safety. (9 n box) ... Because 8 just Isn't working. That's a matchup nightmare.

From today's film room post by Dellenger:
quote:
Pancake’em: On second-and-13 from its own 38-yard line, LSU calls a run for RB Leonard Fournette. He takes it 62 yards for a touchdown, extending the Tigers’ lead to 24-10 in the third quarter.
LSU had called three straight rushing plays for Fournette and, on the last one, he lost three yards. Surely OC Cam Cameron wouldn’t call a fourth straight Fournette run on an obvious passing down, right? He sure would. Thing is, this didn’t catch Syracuse by surprise or anything. The Orange had eight in the box.IMG_5804
Four players make key blocks to spring Fournette: RG Will Clapp (yellow circle), FB JD Moore (red circle) and C Ethan Pocic (black circle). Each of them pick up a pancake block in taking their men to the ground. There’s a fourth block here, too, when freshman LG Maea Teuhema takes out a Syracuse linebacker (yellow arrow) in an impressive second-level block.
The combination of Clapp and Pocic is a strong one. The duo is evolving into LSU’s No. 1 run-blocking pair on the line. The Tigers love to pull them both and run behind them up the gut.

When we went 2-TE 1-WR against Auburn they were cheating their safeties up in the box. They might not have been technically in the box but they were up there.

One thing to remember is that if the D is going to crowd the line, if LF gets through then it's a big gain. I have a feeling it's part of the reason why he's had so many long TDs.

It's exactly why. The safeties are getting sucked in trying to limit Fournette at the LOS and he's making them pay for it. Also, I think most secondary players are mind-fricked by Fournette's speed. There's no way someone that big should be able to outrun everyone on the field.

Miles has had monsters at FB. some have been absolute linebacker erasers.
