To be fair, how many punts did we actually force? We gave up a lot of scores this year. Obviously the main culprit is the general policy of just catch it, coupled with the fact you trusted your offense to drive down and score no matter what, but the lack of forced punts this year has to be a contributing factor to the total lack of PR yards.

I remember Palmer making a return very late against NW St in 2019 with most of the return team being walk ons.

You only had to have about 200 yards to be in the top 20. No. 20 had 195 yards in punt returns for the whole season.

Good. They’re exciting when they pay off but have lost more games than won for us.

From whom?

Our fair catch strategy was a result a non-existent ST coaching. Very telling that fair catching was an upgrade from horrid attempts at punt returning prior to that. Since BK doesn’t believe in dedicating a position coach to ST, I expect to see continued fair catching.

6 teams this year had 2 punt return TDs. Another 36 teams had 1 punt return TD. We had less than 100 punt return yards all season long. Thats the 2nd season in a row we've had under 100 punt return yards all season long. 26 teams had at least 200 punt return yards this past season and 31 teams had at least 200 punt return yards in 2022.

We've got a lot of room for improvement there. Is it hugely game impacting? Obviously not near as big as offense/defense, but its something with solid coaching and someone who knows how to return a punt can get A LOT better
part of the punt return yardage problem has also been an extremely awful defense though.

However strictly speaking on punt return yardage, stuff like that can flip the field, giving you shorter fields. Screw the thoughts of TDs. For instance, getting the ball at the 50 and getting just 10 yards on a return can put you in FG position if you get just 8 yards on that drive.

Smoothest and most natural returner BK ever saw too ...

UGA would likely have threepeated had Auburn followed this advice.

This is false. The strategy was based on analytics and LSU’s high-powered offense, not wanting to risk giving away the ball.

And lots of schools don’t have a dedicated ST coach, including Alabama. It’s extremely common.

Lol, LSU and Bama have the worst kicker rooms in the SEC by far for 2024. Not that it is an issue…and not that it matters.

It shouldn’t have. It was a brilliant strategy. We had a near unstoppable offense and a defense that couldn’t stop anything.

No reason at all to risk losing a possession on a muffed punt.

Chad Jones is crying somewhere

Chad Jones was in there to fair catch essentially. That return TD was an outlier.

They should put a trashcan about 45 yards down field. No returner but normal rush. If the punter can land it in the trash can they get 1 point. Otherwise the receiving team gets the ball where it lands the first time.

I’m 100% on board but this should be worth 5 points.

Kickoffs too. The safety ambassadors see special teams as an unnecessary part of the game from injury perspective. Although, the players love it

Nah. Your thesis holds no water. You don't start the season against the 8th-ranked team in the nation with a redshirt freshman returning punts unless you're hoping for explosive returns. After Anderson muffed that punt against FSU, and in light of the atrocious return game in 2022, I firmly believe Kelly, knowing he again had no dedicated ST coach to improve things, said frick it and decided to just play it safe and fair catch the rest of the season. Had nothing to do with general analytics. Analyzing LSU's specific lousy return stats, maybe.

Does Kevin Faulk, Eddie Kinneson or OBJ have any college age sons yet? How about Skylar Green? Chad Jones? Honey Badger Jr? We need a great punt returner like these guys. I think Kevin Faulk was the best!

Why not just ditch the returner and bring all 11 for the block?

Because if you don't get the block, the punt is going to hit the ground and probably roll 20 yards further than the spot where you would have fair-caught it, fricking up your field position.

It's total bs that if you fair catch a kickoff inside the twenty-five you get it at the twenty-five but if you fair catch a punt within the twenty-five then that is where the ball is placed. What's the difference? While we're on the subject, it's total bs again that the ball is placed on the twenty-five concerning kickoff fair catches and kicks/punts going into the endzone. That's a fourth of the field just given to the offense.

I wish I got paid a fourth of my paycheck without having to work for it.

What about 2 points AND the kicking team retains possession with a new set of downs at the original LOS?
